The Chiefs are 5-0, and the box score is uglier than the scoreboard. Bob and Buk break down Sunday's 22-6 win over the Chargers at Arrowhead: both touchdowns from Kenneth Walker, zero from Patrick Mahomes, and a red zone that went 1-for-4.
Walker had 19 carries for 128 yards and both scores, from 33 and from 2. Mahomes was 23 of 30 for 272 yards, never sacked, and threw no touchdowns in his 100th career win. He also threw a pick. Xavier Worthy caught all 7 of his targets for 73 yards. Travis Kelce had 5 for 53 and played through an ankle he rolled in the first half. He did not miss a snap.
The defense is what made 22-6 feel comfortable. Four sacks, the first in three games. Jack Cochrane's interception went 48 yards. Nick Bolton had 11 tackles. The Chargers were 0-for-3 in the red zone, 0-for-3 on fourth down, and never reached the end zone. Justin Herbert was 22 of 37 for 204, one interception, and a 63.3 rating. He came into the game with seven picks. Los Angeles is now 0-6, their worst start since 2000.
The cost is the offensive line. Jaylon Moore left in the first half and is in concussion protocol. Josh Simmons was already out. Joshua Ezeudu finished the game at right tackle. Chris Roland-Wallace was ejected for a punch. Harrison Butker missed the extra point after Walker's long score and later missed from 52. Kansas City is the AFC's only unbeaten team and 3-0 in the West. Next is Seattle on Sunday night.

The 4-0 Chiefs are back from the bye, and the opponent is the only team in the league that has not won a game. Bob and Buk preview Sunday's AFC West game at Arrowhead: Chiefs vs Chargers, 4-0 against 0-5, and why a winless team is still a trap.
Kickoff is Sunday, October 18, at 3:25 p.m. CT on CBS from Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City is alone in the West. The Chargers are 0-5 after a 23-17 loss at Denver, and they have scored 84 points all year, 16.8 a game.
The easy read is the record. The real read is the injury sheet. Rashee Rice is out with a hamstring and knee after missing every practice this week. Tyquan Thornton is already on IR with the dislocated ankle. Josh Simmons is out with his back. L'Jarius Sneed is questionable with a knee. That leaves Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy, Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen to carry a receiver room that just lost its two biggest downfield threats.
Kenneth Walker III is still the tone-setter, at 537 rushing yards. He is second in the NFL, not first. He sat the bye. James Cook passed him with an extra game. Mahomes is healthy. The Chiefs are plus-5 in turnover differential. Arrowhead is the edge. Rest is the edge. Neither one scores the points if the offense stalls without Rice.
On the other side, Justin Herbert is the problem and the opening. PFF has him at 13 turnover-worthy plays through five weeks, most in the NFL. The Chargers' line is patched together. Joe Alt is out. Kayode Awosika is out. Rashawn Slater had ankle surgery on October 8 and is out long-term. Derwin James and Donte Jackson are also out. Their pass defense has allowed about 205 yards a game. That is fine. It is not the story. The story is whether Kansas City gets to Herbert before a desperate team finds a way to hang around.

The Chiefs are 4-0, alone in the AFC West, and the only undefeated team in the AFC. National boards still have them at No. 2. Bob and Buk take the bye week and stack Kansas City against the West, the conference, and the rest of the NFL.
Through four weeks the division is not close. Chiefs 4-0, Raiders 3-1, Broncos 2-2, Chargers 0-4. Kansas City is already 2-0 in the division. They have scored 118 points, 29.5 a game, and allowed 77, 19.3 a game. That is a plus-41 margin, and it leads the West. The question on the table is how real the cushion is, and what it would take for Las Vegas to make this a race.
League-wide, the boards agree and they do not. ESPN and NFL.com both have San Francisco at No. 1 and Kansas City at No. 2 entering Week 5. The Chiefs' own site tracked FOX, ESPN, Bleacher Report, The New York Times, CBS, and Yahoo all at No. 2. Three teams are still undefeated: the 49ers, the Chiefs, and the Vikings. So the show asks it straight. Is No. 2 fair, or should they be higher?
The numbers that make the argument:
Kenneth Walker III: 87 carries, 537 yards, 6.2 a carry, 4 rushing touchdowns, plus 12 catches for 84 and 2 more scores. 621 yards from scrimmage and 6 touchdowns. He leads the NFL in rushing yards. PFF has him at 90.8, first among running backs.
Patrick Mahomes: 82 of 128, 64.1 percent, 1,037 yards, 9 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, a 106.2 rating. That is 10th in passing yards, tied near the top in touchdowns, 6th in rating, and a 87.8 PFF grade, 4th among quarterbacks.
Travis Kelce: 16 catches, 246 yards, 15.4 a catch, 2 touchdowns. Volume is down from his peak. The efficiency is not.
Mansoor Delane: about 20 tackles, 1 interception, 3 pass breakups, an 84.5 PFF grade, 5th among corners.
Tyquan Thornton was at 11 catches, 219 yards, 19.9 a catch, and 2 touchdowns before the ankle. Reported timeline is 12 to 16 weeks.
The honest part is the bye. Rest helps. Momentum stops. Thornton is out long-term, receiver depth is thin, and Rashee Rice's status is still a question. After the break it gets harder: Chargers, Seahawks, Broncos. The run game and play-action are already giving Mahomes cleaner looks. The defense has been stingy. Special teams still has cleanup left.
If this bye-week stack-up was useful, like it, subscribe to ArrowHeadLines, and drop your take. Where do you rank the Chiefs among the AFC contenders right now, and what is the one area that still needs the most work?
