ART IN DANCE

Water has always played an important role in Julie Gautier’s life. Growing up in Reunion Island, she cultivated a love of dance from her mother and found a way to combine her two passions. We follow Julie as she dives deep into the underwater world in Cenote El Oxman in Playa del Carmen in Mexico, culminating her trip in a transformative performance inspired by her travels.

Gabe Stone Shayer spent more than half of his high school years in Russia under the tutelage of what many consider to be the best ballet school in the world—the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow. Shayer, who is a Philadelphia native, was the first black dancer to graduate from the Academy; and is now making his mark on the ballet world as he dances for the esteemed American Ballet Theatre in NYC.

It is difficult to find the words to describe the ground-breaking work of dancer and choreographer Michael Clark, whose transgressive stagecraft combined classical ballet with a strong punk aesthetic. Born in a village outside Aberdeen, Clark experienced—for lack of a better term—a Billy Elliot moment; first attending his sister's Scottish dance classes at the age of four and then moving to London to train at the Royal Ballet School. They work tireless hours to overcome obstacles that could stand in the way of their dreams. This beautiful dance was created by filmmaker, Ralk Hildenbeutel, from 750 hand-made painting in collaboration with Boris Seewald. It's magical.

Rotoscope-Animation Afro Dance was animated by Saebom Kim and the dancer is Enan. This amazing work was done by the creators at the Berlin University of the Arts in Germany.
