In this amazing episode, I talk with collage artist and art market extraordinaire, Kate Cuthbert. Kate was recently diagnosed with MS and has shifted from her decades-long path selling her work at art markets, to teaching others how to master all there is to know about the wonderfully whacky world of art markets. 

Born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, collage artist, Kate Cuthbert, studied furniture design before focusing on her life-long love of collage art. In 2014 she began sharing her work under the handle 'satin&tat' and has since exhibited across Australia, the USA, Europe, and Scandinavia. She has also been published internationally.

Kate's commissions include work for The Wall Street Journal, Ted Baker, album and book covers, as well as private pieces. In 2021, Print Mag named her one of the "Top 5 Collage Artists to Follow on Instagram." Kate has overseen Collage Expo for the past 8 years- an instagram account dedicated to sharing the art of analogue collage.

Kate sold her collage art at markets for 10 years until a recent diagnosis of MS changed her path. She is now setting out to share her wealth of market experience by teaching others through 'The Art of Markets'. (follow on Instagram @theartofmarkets)

In this episode, I’m going to unpack my thoughts about the speed in which we create things, and the pressure we can come up against to have something new and fresh and amazing to post on social media, both regularly and often. It’s hard when your income is solely based on your art-making. But, for those of us who don’t have to worry about that, but still feel the pressure, I think it’s important to resist the urge to rush the creative process, which leads to rush-posting, and to instead focus on the work itself. There is SUCH a difference between cranking out rushed work to post for the sake of posting, and thoughtful work that we share when we’re ready. I’m here to validate that it’s okay to slow it down. In this episode, I share ten differences between what it looks and feels like to make Big Wow Art and just Mediocre Art. Making Big Wow Art is no joke! This process can trigger endless amounts of fear and doubt and can be physically and emotionally draining. Time and again I'm reminded that being an artist and living this life is not for the weak, or for the faint of heart. But, it's so worth it in the end, once we can recognize the difference between when we're offering up our best efforts and when we're not.

In this episode I try to reconcile the massive time gap between when we create things and when the world finally understands them in very tangible ways. Artists and successful people have always experienced this time warp, but it can feel really challenging to keep going if we don't realize the misalignment that is just part of the creative process and success in general. Once we understand and accept that this time warp exists, we can work with it, not against it, and find that our patience is so worth the wait!

In this episode, I explain the benefits of making lots of art, regularly, and often. I never used to value this idea and thought it just seemed wasteful and pointless. I thought I could just make art here and there, when I felt like it, and all would be well. But my art career continued to suffer and I just never understood why. When I started a disciplined practice, making more art, more regularly, some super magical things started to happen and everything started turning around.. Today, the magic is still happening!

In this episode, I expand upon the process of committing to your art. It seems like an amorphous idea, and I think the more natural talent we have, the more likely it is that we will avoid committing to our art, thinking that success will just arrive on its own. When that doesn’t happen, it can be really puzzling and very humbling! But we can turn that all around, once we commit to doing the work and standing our ground through thick and thin as an artist. This process has made me a better artist and a better person, and I’d love to share my process with you.
