Two years ago, hunter Nicole Qualtieri posted to social media inviting anyone to deer camp near her home in Montana. She wasn't sure how many ladies would bite. The response, it turned out, was overwhelming. And it's been an annual tradition ever since. Hosting hunt camp has given Nicole new perspective on HOW exactly we recruit and retain new hunters. This week on Artemis, we're diving back into the R3 conversation - recruitment, retention, reactivation - and where community fits into that mix.

Kodi Jo Jaspers is a hunter and wildlife biologist whose master's work focused on understanding the effect of residual lead from ammunition on non-target species. This week on Artemis, Kodi Jo joins us to talk about her transition from lead to copper ammo, and what she's learned in the process.

Christa Whiteman was a mountaineer and rock climber before she became a hunter in the woods of New York. All three voices on the Artemis podcast this week learned to hunt as adults. It's a steep learning curve. When you're new, you can't always tell whether you're doing it wrong, or whether you're just not finding game. But there's joy in the journey, and Christa tells us what that looks like for her.

Sattie Fisher grew up in a subsistence hunting household in Yakama Nation. Her family values taught her to appreciate the bounty of the land - from berries to fish, to elk and deer. In this episode, Sattie joins Artemis to talk about her hunting culture, being identified as a 'female hunter,' and evolving expectations of gender roles.

This week on the podcast we're joined by Mary Greene, who works as an attorney with the National Wildlife Federation’s Public Lands team. How do newly proposed changes to the National Environmental Policy Act affect the integrity of the EIS process and the public’s ability to comment? Artemis takes a deep dive into NEPA, with a timely look at how changes to NEPA are currently undergoing the NEPA process (if that makes sense).

This week on the Artemis podcast we're joined by Montana hunter Sarah Keller, who tells us about carrying a deer out whole, and getting by on those rough pack-outs when the body is... ahem... Cindy Barlow is the sixth female hunting outfitter to be licensed in the state of Wyoming. When she's not guiding trips for her business, Antelope Creek Outfitters, Cindy is introducing her grandkids to the outdoors, staying active in local politics, and polishing her skills as a craftswoman by sewing hides.

The learning curve of hunting is long and steep. So how do we grow our community? This week, Artemis is joined by Sam Pedder from the Council to Advance the Hunting and Shooting Sports to talk about how we create a new generation of responsible, conservation-minded hunters and anglers.

Who is Artemis? The group's genesis story is rooted in a pack of women who sought to elevate the voice of female sportswomen and conservationists. Turns out, it's a mission a lot of people are interested in. On this episode, hear bowhunter and conservationist Jess Johnson dish on what kind of earrings make a legislator pay attention to you (rifle shells, everyone... big 'ol rifle shells), what's on deck for the Artemis Ambassadors program, and why this work matters.
