The foundation has been a partner of Artists for Plants *derivatio nominis* derives from the root ‘oto’, meaning ‘a living being underground’, specifically referring to ‘underground worms, earthworms and other similar creatures’. As part of its commitment to protecting the rainforest, the Otonga Foundation also supports children’s education through scholarships and long-distance sponsorship programmes. Ayanava Sil, nostro ospite questa settimana, è un fotografo indiano specializzato in fotografia di strada e documentaristica. La fotografia è la sua passione. Durante la settimana lavora per un'importante azienda globale di e-commerce e tecnologia, mentre nei fine settimana si dedica alla fotografia: a volte scatta, altre volte riordina i suoi archivi e spesso esce con la macchina fotografica per documentare la vita quotidiana. Da autodidatta, ama immortalare momenti comuni che spesso passano inosservati. Crede che ogni strada, ogni persona e ogni luogo racchiudono una storia in attesa di essere raccontata. La fotografia gli ha insegnato a rallentare, a osservare con attenzione e ad apprezzare la bellezza delle cose semplici.
Non mette in scena situazioni né chiede alle persone di mettersi in posa; osserva semplicemente la vita mentre scorre, senza aspettative, consapevole che i momenti migliori spesso si rivelano a chi sa pazientare. A volte attende per ore, altre volte tutto accade in una frazione di secondo. Il suo lavoro consiste nel trovare poesia nella quotidianità. La fotografia lo ha cambiato anche come persona: lo ha reso più paziente, più comprensivo e più vicino a persone provenienti da contesti diversi.
Queste fotografie raccontano un'unica storia: mostrano come le piante si riappropriano silenziosamente degli spazi lasciati dagli esseri umani. Celebrano la creatività del mondo vegetale: le piante si adattano, sopravvivono e trasformano silenziosamente l'ambiente che le circonda.

Ayanava Sil, our guest this week, is a street and documentary photographer from India. Photography is his passion. During the weekdays he works for a leading global e‑commerce and tech company, and on weekends he dedicates his time to photography, sometimes shooting, sometimes going through his archives, and often out with his camera documenting everyday life. As a self‑taught photographer he loves capturing ordinary moments that often go unnoticed. He believes every street, every person, and every place has a story waiting to be told. Photography has taught him to slow down, observe carefully, and appreciate the beauty in simple things.
He doesn’t stage scenes or ask people to pose; he simply observes life as it happens, without expectations because the best moments often appear when you are patient. Sometimes he waits for hours, and sometimes everything happens in just one second. His work is about finding poetry in ordinary life. Photography has also changed him as a person: it has made him more patient, more understanding, and more connected with people from different backgrounds.
These photographs tell a single story: they show how plants quietly reclaim the spaces humans leave behind. They celebrate the creativity of plants: they adapt, survive, and quietly transform the world around them.

João Iganci è un botanico, ricercatore, artista botanico e docente brasiliano il cui lavoro coniuga scienza vegetale, conservazione e arte. Le sue ricerche più recenti si concentrano sulla flora unica della Pampa sudamericana – uno degli ecosistemi più minacciati al mondo – dove studia la tassonomia vegetale, la biodiversità e il rischio di estinzione. Parallelamente all'attività scientifica, João si dedica all'illustrazione e all'arte botanica, utilizzando l'espressione artistica per comunicare la bellezza e la vulnerabilità delle specie vegetali a rischio. João Iganci is a Brazilian botanist, researcher, botanical artist, and professor whose work brings together plant science, conservation, and art. His latest research focuses on the unique flora of the South American Pampas, one of the world's most threatened ecosystems, where he studies plant taxonomy, biodiversity, and extinction risk. Alongside scientific publications, João has developed practices in botanical illustration and botanical art, using art to communicate the beauty and vulnerability of endangered plant species. As founder of the Scientific Illustration Nucleus at the Federal University of Pelotas, he also mentors a new generation of scientific illustrators. In this conversation with Artists for Plants, João reflects on the intersection of science and creativity, and how botanical art can help reconnect people with the plant world and inspire action to protect biodiversity.

This week, Silvia and Mike interview Michel Gauthier, CEO of the Forget For A Moment Foundation. This Canadian foundation promotes the vital presence of greenery within healthcare facilities. Thanks to the foundation, plants and flowers—often absent from healthcare facilities—are becoming increasingly common across Canada, allowing patients to access more oxygen and benefit from the presence of nature inside clinics and hospitals.
The Foundation partnered with Artists For Plants on "The Creativity of Plants" call, launched in 2025; the initiative gained significant visibility, thanks to the Ottawa Art Gallery, where the digital artworks were exhibited until May 2026.
