I was super excited to interview Heller An Shapiro and share the amazing work ArtStream is doing. Especially now that they have gone virtual and can literally work with anyone around the world! For those who are not familiar, here is ArtStream's Mission. "Through collaborative performance and lifelong learning opportunities, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain the skills and confidence to engage with the world.

Heller An wanted to ensure I let people know scholarships are available for all of ArtStream's programs. There is research proving the value of connection. The work ArtStream is doing really does change lives. The friendships created are authentic.

Here is an overview of the programs ArtStream is currently offering. Classes:

Eight Week Sessions, which last between 1 - 1.5 hours each. Alternatively, you may sign up for "Take Five", doing (5) sessions in a week.

Workshops:
These are single sessions, currently (1) hour long. Starting in January 2021 the duration will increase to 1.5 hours. It's a party setting. Starts with a focus on helping attendees be comfortable introducing themselves. Ends with a dance party.
Positively Speaking focuses on public speaking. Students who have participated have gone on to present at Capitol Hill and job interviews. Speaks to how much it helps self-confidence and speaking ability.
ArtStream has (6) Inclusive theater companies, each with 15 adult performers and a full professional production team. They are supported by peer volunteers and over (80) teaching artists. Over a six-month period, they will create a musical, assign roles and perform. I cannot stress how unbelievable this is - these are not performers who are acting out a screenplay. They are creating their own screenplay!
Additionally, ArtStream has (4) Cabaret companies, again with 15 adult performers. These performers are solo or small group acts. They choose what they will perform, from poetry readings to song covers.
I'm not sure this podcast does justice for the impact ArtStream can have on adults with disabilities or the broader communities. There is no doubt in my mind that ArtStream is shattering preconceived notions of what people with disabilities can, and cannot due. I hope you will join me in supporting them.
