Sometimes In January or February
you get a few warm days
and the snow all melts away
you get a taste of spring
your heart and soul take wings
with the warmth that the thaw brings
though the trees above are still all bare
while the crocuses sleep unaware
there is a scent of
hope locked in the air
and though the warmth
you know won’t tarry there
your mood is elevated
by the bitter winds abated
even though winter is
fated to return again
you bask in springs pretend
wishing it would not end
It mimics love my friends.
Sometimes in the icy blast
of a love you knew
that did not last
where you can’t escape
from what has past
and your future is
the same forecast
you get a few warm glances
some other lonely souls advances
and the frigid world in which you live
is melted by a smile…..
and your heart and soul take wings
in the thaw that new love brings
though your limbs are both left bare
you suddenly become aware
of sweet hope locked in the air
and you realize a chance
to let the warmth you
knew return to share
even though it might not tarry there
it’s a feeling that’s beyond compare
your mood is elevated
from the shadows where love faded

I found a black
horse in the desert
not yet malnourished
skin and bone
miles from anywhere
that was civilized
for reasons left unknown
With an empty saddle
strapped across his back
and he was bent
beneath the weight
of his saddlebags
that dragged him down
and a thirst he could not slate.
His reins were
tangled in saguarros
that poor horse
could not break free
his brown eyes they
begged for mercy
hoping his savior
would be me
but when I looked
into his saddlebags
they were filled
with bricks of gold
more money then
I’d ever hope to earn
and it made my
blood run cold....
Cause I’d passed a
cowboy 40 miles back
lying face down in the dirt
with his body full of bullet holes
and his face shot up the worst
it was the crack of dawn
when I came upon
his most unfortunate soul
and there wasn’t much
that I could do
so I dug him a grave hole

Somebody shot that
poor man off his horse
in the middle of the night
and this must have been
the horse he rode
that took off in fright and flight
It’s really hard to
find a coal black horse
in the dark when
there’s no moon
but I knew they
would be tracking him
and they’d be
coming for him soon
So I gave that horse some water
I fed him lots of desert grass
and he thanked me with a nuzzle
for his drink and added fat
Then I took four bricks
of that cursed gold
as I loosened his reins held fast
knowing I must send him packing
so I slapped him on the ass.
He took off in a heated run
disappearing in the desert’s dust
and I laid my saddle blanket down
behind my horses butt.
I roped it tight to my walking stick
and then anchored it to my saddle
knowing it would erase all of my tracks
with no trace as I skedaddled.
But I never heard any stories told
about that black horse and the gold
one would think that it’s recovery
would be a tale that never grows old
but no man can find a black horse
by searching in a moonless desert
he’s just a shadow they will never see
and all their efforts will grow desperate
Perhaps he’s just
a tumbled pile of bones
who broke his leg
in some dry gulch
while the desert
buried those saddlebags
underneath a sandy bulge.
But I’m a rich man
with my bricks of gold
they’ll support me
till I grow old
But I wish I’d taken
that whole damned load
which I’m regretting
truth be told
cause I’d found
a mother lode.
but I’m still breathing
I suppose.

Just another ordinary day
no special date filled up
with bright window displays
little to lift my mood
along the way
nothing notable
foreseeable
or remarkable
that could make
my hours spent
closer to something
more phenomenal
Just some voices of children
in a sing song happy pattern
and the roar of a Harley as
it’s leaving from a tavern
across some windshield glass
that’s gleaming in the sun
from a wreck where
it lies shattered
like the love I felt for you
until it all no
longer mattered
cause I’ve got
nowhere I can go
so I just wander
empty streets
my life left incomplete
even the bright sun
doesn’t seem as sweet
or the fact that I don’t
need a mask to go
outside and breathe

the shoreline
from which life
itself crawled out
and took existence
I escape from the insistence
of all my endless
scheduled duties
I get lost in all the beauty
of the gentle waves before me
and the sand between my toes
plus the fish that
wait for baited hooks
they offer me something to cook
that is fresher and more tasty
than any store bought, tasteless pulp
I celebrate life with each gulp
of the salty air and crispy bites
of the supper that I caught tonight
and my warm fire made of driftwood
chases evening’s chills into the woods
Mother Nature makes my life so good
as I rest within the cradle that
my butt leaves in the sand
while the stars all twinkle
high above...
like the twinkle in my eyes
and the summer wind it sighs
while a distant loon replies
there are never enough
of days and nights
like this before I’ll die
and there is no damn reason why
I just need to walk away
shedding my civilized skin
in exchange for basking in this place
that plants huge
grins upon my face
separated from the human race
that moves in such an endless rush
I come here to enjoy the hush
or listen to the seagulls cry
and the crickets chirping lullabies
away from all the blaring noise
that cities feel they must employ
heading back to when I was a boy
before the obligations
left me stranded in stagnations
of the jobs that I must do
far away from solitude

my fire covered up in dirt

that mother nature gladly lends
to bring me perfect peace.
