Beginning in the 1940s, postal workers Boyd Kline and Lawrence Crocker of Medford, Ore., hiked almost every weekend in the Siskiyou Mountains of Southern Oregon and Northern California. In the spring and summer they were looking for rare flowers. In the fall they would go back to harvest seeds.

During the gold rush, there was a layover spot called Mud Springs in Shasta County that was used by those traveling to and from the gold fields of Shasta and Del Norte counties or Sacramento and San Francisco. It was located off the old Henleyville Road, also known as the Paskenta Road. It offered weary travelers a place to camp where the creeks were easily forded.

The South Coast town of Bandon, Ore., held an unusual Indian pageant at the town park one August Saturday night in 1924.

The teacher at the Big Springs School in Siskiyou County, Calif., Maybelle Needham, married Joe Stallcup in 1916. A home was built for the young couple on the Stallcup ranch where Needham had boarded with the family.

Max Muller was a merchant, postmaster and politician who was instrumental in the development of Jacksonville, Ore., during the late 1800s. Although not as well-known as banker C.C. Beekman, or photographer Peter Britt, Muller became an important figure in the growing town.

Southern Oregon native Marjorie O’Harra was appointed Jackson County’s first female commissioner in 1973, where she pushed for the establishment of the Bear Creek Greenway.

Pacific Telephone and Telegraph announced plans to build a large new telephone office building in Klamath Falls in 1930, but the company delayed construction for a decade as the Great Depression dragged on.

In August 1914, the Southern Oregon river hamlet of Illahe held its first picnic and venison barbeque at Gold Bar on the Rogue River. It lasted four days and nights.

An entrepreneur who owned large tracts of land in Curry County, Ore., Robert D. Hume, announced a land giveaway in March 1908.
