The weekly Ashland Tidings was the first newspaper published in Ashland, Ore., its first edition dated June 17, 1876. The present-day newspaper’s website says it was a time when “Ashland had about 500 people but neither church (n)or saloon.” The website quotes the first-editor, James M. Sutton, as writing, “whiskey is sold by the bottle and preaching is done in the schoolhouse; and therefore, the people are generally happy.”

The Crescent City Chamber of Commerce and the Siskiyou National Forest promoted new parks by inviting everyone in Del Norte County to the grand opening in June 1936 of a picnic ground in Gasquet, Calif.

A failed Oregon homesteader in the early 1900s, Samuel H. Boardman, would become known as the father of the state’s park system.

During the late 1890s and early 1900s, the Montague Brass Band toured Siskiyou County, providing music for special events.

The birth of Girl Scout camping in Southern Oregon began in 1927 when Mrs. Leonard Carpenter donated a site on the Applegate River, furnished a large cabin, and the American Legion and Boy Scouts built a mess hall. Suddenly, a girl’s camp experience included nature activities, hikes, swimming, crafts and opportunities to make lifelong friends.

Seeking retirement, Dr. Wilbur Cartwright came to Gold Beach, Ore., in 1930. Instead, when the area’s only doctor quit, Cartwright spent the next 30 years actively practicing medicine.

Vesta Ranous Terwilliger was born in 1861 in Yreka, Calif., the daughter of Francis M. Ranous and Mary H. Hood. Her father became a carpenter and builder and moved with his wife to Yreka in 1856 with his mother’s family.

Fire raged through the wooden Knights of Pythias Hall in Dunsmuir, Calif., in 1924, and spread through much of the town in what became known as “The Big Fire.” Luckily, the fire ignited after members had left a banquet.

One World War II soldier stationed at Camp White, Sgt. Jimmy Dunlevy, became a solid citizen of nearby Medford, Ore., after the war.

In 1925, Bandon, Ore., highly anticipated the completion of an indoor and heated salt-water swimming pool.
