Born in Massachusetts in 1844, the son of Samuel and Diadamia Boyes, Charles Bassett Boyes was 17 years old when he came West by covered wagon with his mother and other family members.

The first automotive electric store in Medford, Ore., Witham’s Battery and Electric Service, was established in 1923 by H. Clay Witham.

Klamath Falls businessman Rufus Moore submitted a report to the Portland Oregonian newspaper in February 1899 about the challenging conditions facing livestock producers in the Klamath Basin. Moore said their primary concern was ensuring enough hay during severe or prolonged winter conditions.

Forest fires had plagued Northern California for years before the Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District passed a $139 million bond issue in 2016 that included funds to build two fire training towers on its Redding campus.

In the 1850s, most Southern Oregon men were miners seeking their fortunes in rough mining camps, while a few farmers planted crops on donation land claims.

Oregon’s Rogue Valley shipped apples and pears all over the world in the first decade of the 20th century. The Russian czar reportedly took notice in 1909.

Oregon’s first state park superintendent, Samuel H. Boardman, envisioned a coastal park in Curry County. He preferred a National Park, but when that wasn’t possible, he foresaw a state park, the present-day, 1,470-acre Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor.

In March 1967, a private plane took off from Portland for San Francisco with pilot Alvin Oien, his wife, Phyllis, and their teenage daughter, Carla. The plane never reached its destination. A massive search gave up after two weeks.

Stephen H. Soulé was the son of Ebenezer and Cornelia Soulé. Born in 1836, in Yates County, N.Y., he was only 3 weeks old when his father died.
