  • 478: 6 Ways to Change OurMedia Diet — and Change the World With Jodie Jackson

Today's episode is with Jodie Jackson. Jodie is an author, researcher and campaigner. She holds a Master’s Degree in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of East London (UK), where she investigated the psychological impact of the news. As she discovered evidence of the beneficial effects of solutions-focused news on our wellbeing, she grew convinced of the need to spread consumer awareness. She is a regular speaker at media conferences and universities. Her new book is You Are What You Read: Why Changing Your Media Diet Can Change the World and the main idea behind her book is that we need to get back to the original intention of news — to inform, educate, and empower, not to entertain. Today’s news is delivered to hook us into drama and problems with no solutions. But solutions are critical to a more balanced, healthier news diet. It’s time to wake up and became deliberate about how we consume the news.

Our wide ranging conversation cover the following:

    • Why the news industry feeds us a steady diet of bad news — and why we can change it.
    • How paying for news helps enable news organizations to gain independence.
    • How to burst our filter bubble and gain a fully dimensional view of the world.
    • Why the news has such a negative impact on our individual and collective health.
    • How to tap into the power of solutions-based journalism.
    • How we can consume news that gives us hope and empowers us to act.

  • 477: Sophia Chang: The First Asian Woman in Hip Hop is the Baddest B* in the Room

Today's episode is with Sophia Chang. Sophia's memoir THE BADDEST BITCH IN THE ROOM is a 360 degree immersive and unprecedented audio experience that combines character voices reading their own dialogue, original score, licensed music, sound design, and bonus content. A number of hip hop luminaries, including members of the Wu-Tang Clan have lent their voices to the project. Some notable secret artists have also contributed original music for the score.

As the child of Korean immigrants raised in Vancouver, Sophia wanted to be white until she heard “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in her senior year of high school. She diverged wildly from the prescribed path of academia to flee to New York where she would become the first Asian woman in hip-hop. Throughout her storied career, she worked with Paul Simon as well as managed Wu-Tang Clan members ODB, RZA, GZA, as well as Q Tip, A Tribe Called Quest, Raphael Saadiq, and D'Angelo. In 1995, Chang left the music business to train kung fu and manage a 34th Generation Shaolin monk who would become her partner and father of her two children. Always ready to embrace new challenges, she also worked in fashion at a digital agency, and wrote a screenplay for HBO.

THE BADDEST BITCH IN THE ROOM is for anyone who ever felt marginalized, invisible, undervalued, anyone who was ever told that you can't follow your dreams, anyone who was ever made to feel that you don't belong, anyone who dares to defy stereotypes, rules, and expectations, and anyone who has the audacity to tell their story and pursue their passion.

  • 476: Finding Love Across Cultures With KC McCormick Çiftçi

Today's episode is an interview with KC McCormick Çiftçi. KC is a successful coach, podcaster, and writer. She also works with amazing people in her private membership community. When she and her husband started dating, it felt like all the odds were stacked against them. Neither one of them knew what they were doing, and their respective Turkish and American cultures differed greatly in their depictions of a functional relationship. Her internet searches for helpful resources came up empty, so it felt like they were navigating a lot of challenges, from immigration options to cultural misunderstandings, without a map. As they went through their own individual personal growth journeys, along with a successful fiance visa immigration process, the path ahead started to feel clearer. They learned how to communicate well and how to own their own growth rather than only expecting change from each other. One of the things she has learned is that the majority of the conflict and miscommunication that happens in intercultural marriages (or any intimate relationship) benefits from each party doing inner work.

This helps us better understand our own cultural influences and biases, rather than flinging blame at the other person. The reason she started Borderless Stories is simply because she wishes that it had existed in those early months and years of her relationship when she needed it and couldn’t find it. She believes people falling in love across geographical, political, religious, and cultural borders is a great source of hope in this world, and it’s her goal to do as much as she can to help support those who do just that.

Maybe you’ve found yourself in the same position she was in those years ago. You’re grateful to have a beautiful partner in your life, while at the same time feeling a little overwhelmed by the geographic, linguistic, or cultural barriers in between you. Well look no further because KC has got you covered!

  • 475: Make Your Wierdness Your Edge & Be A Free Range Human With Marianne Cantwell

Today's interview is with Marianne Cantwell. Marianne is an author, speaker and mentor now but a decade ago she was a corporate-cage human who definitely needed out.

After watching too many days go by when she was cooped inside staring out the window (feeling like she had to leave a big part of herself at the door in order to get paid), she finally quit her job and went free range.

Not because she had some grand mission to ‘dominate the world’… but because she genuinely wanted to create an own boss ‘career’ where she got to feel like her – where she could work when, where and how she wanted, write her own ‘job description’ – and live a life that felt right every day.

This philosophy is what underpins Free Range Humans today: a movement with 20,000 people, online courses and events, and one bestselling book, they have worked with thousands of people to find their thing and bring it to life – as them.
