We know slavery ended.

But what happened the day after? And the generation after that?

Season 5 of Ascended Warrior begins by pulling back the veil onsomething we often experience without realizing it: the world we inherited.

For me, that became personal during a trip to Hampton, Virginia.

I knew Hampton's modern reputation. What she didn't know was the history underneath it—the people who escaped slavery and gathered around Fort Monroe, the Great Contraband Camp, the communities they created, and the extraordinary role education played as people attempted to build lives afterbondage.

The more I learned, the more the same streets began to look different.

Nothing about Hampton had changed.

What changed was what I could see.

From there, this episode asks a much larger question.

Slavery wasn't simply a relationship between an enslaved person and an owner. Economies, laws, labor systems, education, geography, institutions and generations of beliefs about race grew around it.

When legal ownership disappeared, what happened to everything surrounding it?

And what happens when we inherit the outcomes of history without understanding the history that produced them?

This isn't a conversation about inherited guilt.

It's an invitation to become curious about inherited conclusions.

Because becoming conscious isn't about having the perfect opinions.

t's about becoming willing to see what you couldn't see before and deciding consciously what you carry forward.

We inherited a world before we were conscious enough to choose one.

Before we could question it, we inherited ideas about race, gender, morality, religion, wealth, belonging, success—and what a human being was supposed to be.

But where did those ideas come from?

Season 5 of Ascended Warrior: The Inherited World follows the language humanity created to justify its systems and asks what happens when the laws and institutions change faster than the beliefs beneath them.

This isn't about inherited guilt or telling you what to believe. These episodes are questions, not answers.

What did we inherit? What have we already changed? And what might still be hiding beneath the surface of our own consciousness?

What do we keep? What do we change? What do we transcend?

I went to Hawaiʻi looking for spiritual messages.

What I came home with was something simpler:

Maybe this life isn't about constantly learning who we are. Maybe it's about remembering.

Throughout my time on Oʻahu, I found myself reconnecting with things that are remarkably easy to lose in ordinary life—the Earth, change, playfulness, presence, and the awareness that our lives are part of something much larger than the moment we're standing in.

And Hawaiʻi also reflected something back to me about myself.

I realized how seriously I had been taking my own spiritual journey.

I was approaching certain experiences almost like tests: Am I doing this right? Am I being authentic enough? Am I honoring who I really am?

Especially when I found myself back in military spaces, I became so focused on being true to myself that I sometimes lost the experience itself.

Hawaiʻi reminded me:

This isn't a test. It's a journey.

You can be spiritual and playful.

Grounded and curious.

Deep without making everything heavy.

You can honor where you've been without refusing to change.

And perhaps most importantly, you can stop searching long enough to actually be here.

In this special episode of Ascended Warrior, I share the deeper lessons that emerged from my time in Hawaiʻi: remembering versus learning, our connection with nature, allowing ourselves to change, finding balance between seriousness and play, being present for the life we're actually living, and becoming conscious of the ripples we leave behind.

Because someday we will be the ancestors.

The question isn't simply what we accomplished while we were here.

It's what our presence added to the world.

What if joy isn’t something we earn after life gets better?

What if it’s one of the most powerful ways we meet life while it’s still difficult?

We live in a world constantly competing for our fear—through headlines, uncertainty, conflict, outrage, and the endless stream of things we’re told we should be worried about.

And somewhere along the way, many of us began confusing suffering with caring.

If someone else is hurting, should we hurt too?

If the world is struggling, is it selfish to feel joy?

In this episode of Ascended Warrior, I explore why I’m beginning to see joy very differently—not as happiness, positivity, or an escape from reality, but as a form of grounded power.

We explore the difference between empathy and suffering, fear and concern, and what happens when we stop allowing the outside world to determine our internal state.

I also share a realization from my time in Hawaii: I became so concerned with being authentic and doing the experience “right” that I caught myself getting in the way of actually living it.

Maybe awakening isn’t about becoming more serious.

Maybe strength isn’t measured by how much of the world’s pain we can carry.

And maybe we don’t have to wait until everything is okay before we allow ourselves to feel alive.

You do not need to honor the suffering of the world by refusing joy.

So here’s the question:

Can you witness what’s happening, care deeply, take action when action is needed—and still choose joy?

Because perhaps joy isn’t the opposite of caring.

Perhaps it’s one of the most powerful things we can bring into a frightened world.

I also share one of the most personal stories I've ever told on the podcast—my experience serving in the military while feeling like I had to hide significant parts of who I was in order to belong. It became a powerful lesson in what happens when we trade authenticity for acceptance.
