Parables are simple stories used to illustrate moral or spiritual lessons. They can often be thought of as a story version of a proverb as well as an elongated metaphor or allegory. Today’s parables cover two portions of Scripture in Matthew 20 and Matthew 25. These two passages “balance” one another out with Matthew 25 focusing on our own responsibility and accountability in the Kingdom of God. The Parable of the Talents remind us how we are to use our resources and abilities wisely with the Parable of the Sheep and Goats illustrating God’s judgment or concern regarding these matters. Passages of God’s judgment are invitations into uncomfortable growth for all of us. On the other hand is the Parables of the Workers in the Field which focus on God’s gracious blessings to all. As your group ponders these parables of Jesus, remember they do not describe moral or theological absolutes but rather are Jesus’s invitation to reimagine the world of your experience.
