Elly is Chinese-German, born and raised in Hamburg, Germany. After completing her German school education, she moved to Scotland to pursue her undergraduate degree at the University of St Andrews. Elly started posting cover songs online at the age of 16 and has since amassed an audience of more than half a million across various platforms with diverse video content, including multilingual cover songs. Beyond music, Elly has extended her influence to address xenophobia and Asian hate crimes, especially during the Covid pandemic.

Chi is a Vietnamese-British artist and designer, born in Ho Chi Minh City and raised in Vietnam, England, and Scotland. She was named after a mushroom by her family, hoping for her to have a peaceful life and a clear career vision. However, everything changed after she moved to the UK at the age of 12. There, she developed a deep interest in art and design, prompting her grandfather to ask, "So, you make propagandas for the state?"

Recently, Chi left her job in London to spend time exploring East and Southeast Asia, aiming to reconnect with her roots and discover her next steps.

Hunter is American, born and raised in the mountains of Vermont, where he was homeschooled until the day he finally enrolled in the Putney School at the age of 15. Hunter is an extraordinary and unconventional art researcher who spends much of his time meeting and gathering stories from artists of all walks of life, mainly in the East and Southeast Asian regions. The archive he has been developing, called KIRTI, already includes hundreds of artists, often never represented in mainstream art scenes. Hunter’s mission is to develop KIRTI into an alternative art publishing practice that is open-sourced and serves as a countermeasure to art world silos and stratifications. Hunter is also a grandson of two cultural icons of mid-century America: Mark Shaw, the brilliant fashion photographer who took striking and personal images of the Kennedy family, Audrey Hepburn, Dior, and many more, and Pat Suzuki, a pioneering Japanese-American Broadway singer, who was famously featured on the cover of Time Magazine.

Most importantly, Hunter is a beloved friend of mine. He was also my first-ever business partner when we started an ice cream brand called Elm Lea during our studies at The Putney School at the age of 18.

Vincent is Chinese-British, born and raised in Scotland while frequently visiting his relatives in Hong Kong. He is a UK immigration lawyer with dual qualifications in Scotland, and England & Wales. Can there be a lasting resolution to the China-Taiwan conflict? In this highlight from our third episode, Juno and Hsinyen Lai, a Political Science Lecturer at the University of St Andrews, share their honest thoughts on the Taiwan-China relations. 

Hsinyen is Taiwanese, born and raised in Taipei. After studying Political Science and Arabic in Taiwan, he moved to Scotland 12 years ago to obtain his PhD in Politics from the University of Edinburgh. He is currently a member of the Foreign Policy Analysis Research Network in Edinburgh and teaches Middle Eastern International Relations at the University of St Andrews. Hsinyen is a proud father of two Scottish-Taiwanese boys and he is also a coach and an MVP baseball player at the Tayport Baseball Team in Scotland (yes, Scotland has baseball too!).

We are in Seoul, Korea today, and our guest is Bryan Do.

Bryan is Korean American, born in Columbus Ohio and raised in California. Bryan is an entrepreneur, tech executive, journalist, philanthropist and a family man. After a wildly successful near 10-year stint at Microsoft, he founded and sold one of the very first craft-beer companies in Korea to Anheuser Busch In-Bev, and now runs The Three Societies Distillery, where he achieved a remarkable feat by introducing the first ever Korean Single Malt Whisky called KI ONE. This achievement was recognised further where they have already won 2 Golds at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition; this was a rather unusual and shocking accomplishment for such a young whisky from a country unknown in the whisky world. I believe this feat is telling of Bryan’s character, leadership and his obsession with quality. 

In our conversation, Bryan and I dive into a wide range of topics, from his upbringing as an Asian American in California, the LA Riot, to becoming the most innovative and successful entrepreneur in the beer & spirits industry in South Korea.
