if you have heard those three words straight out of the womb, you're not alone. for those who don't know, it translates to "what will people say?" it's a phrase much-dreaded by myself and my guest, ariana zemaryalai. it's taken me a long time to get over those words dictating my life. we'll be discussing individualism and collectivism and the wider effects of how this phrase dictates our lives. has anything really changed from older generations, to millennials, and now for those of us in gen z? what are our experiences with this phrase and what happens when we internalise that thinking? are we going to move on from this kind of thinking or will this always be a part of our different communitiesstay tuned as we will be navigating the thoughts behind these words together! if you want to be part of the conversation, don't forget to use #asianish and tag us on our socials, we'd love to hear your thoughts too!
we have grown up with some interesting characters in terms of play and video games. i once played with Bratz and MyScene dolls, now I'm sitting here for hours on my switch, unable to put down Smash Bros. the video game industry has been rapidly evolving and advancing towards bigger and better things ever since we were born in the late 1990s. it has made play and gaming an integral part of our lives, our societies and respective communities. however, even with all of these technological advances there are fundamental issues with where we can find ourselves in the characters and avatars on screen. i'm joined by Rebecca Kinsella to discuss lgbtq+ and female representation in games and gaming culture.
we'll be discussing our perceptions of love, romance and how we view love marriages and arranged marriages. the world of arranged-marriages is cutthroat to say the least. so, how do we tackle the issues that come with them? are the values of arranged marriages solely an Asian phenomenon or is there some universality to them? why are sons and mothers-in-law obsessed with trauma and suffering? come and join us! we are giving you our insights as we navigate the world of high-stake rishtas and the realm of romance.
i am joined by the wonderful gemma lovett today to discuss dating, sexting and hitting the apps. we'll be focusing on how we have navigated the world of dating as women of colour. we're going to tell you some of our best (and the more interesting) stories of dating, sexting and what we've encountered on these apps. come, join us, and let's explore what we do when we encounter micro-aggressions, questionable texts, and what it means to be fetishised.
you're finally meeting a long-term friend of mine who has been lecturing me on the ethics of fashion and art from day one! emma lam and i are diving into the world of fashion today, how we fit into it, and work within it and are represented by it. we're focusing on some of the key issues we are currently reckoning with in the fashion industry: diversity, representation, interning and sustainability (environmental, ecological and ethical clothing). come, join, get to know us and we can explore these questions together!
with my next guests, sawdah bhaimiya and sara (the editors-in-chief of diaspora speaks), we will be exploring what the word BAME genuinely means and how it's being used incorrectly. are we a fan of the term or do we hate it? how do we conceptualise and execute the idea of BAME? in what ways has this labelling affected us? will we ever find that the term is used correctly or must we come up with a solution to this catch-all term (if there is one, at least)? come, join, get to know us and we can explore these questions together! if you want to join in the conversation, don't forget to use #asianish or comment on the respective episode posts @vinny__sandhu on instagram.
hey there... i'm vinny sandhu. i'm brown, i'm indian, i'm british - i'm asian(ish). this show will dive into everything your aunties, your uncles and all of your relatives will never openly talk about. that's right, i'm exploring topics with no sharam, ones that will even have your parents talking about how i'm a very un-sanskari woman. nothing is off-limits here as we jump from societal issues, to cultural issues, then all the way around to identity and sexuality. i'm going to be revealing my personal experiences, thoughts and opinions, and hopefully you can share your experiences with me and my guests, too! if you're intrigued, head over to listen to the show, and i'll be there with others to welcome you to the world of asian(ish). see you there!
with my first guest, sumayyah sheikh, we will be delving into what it means to be a "coconut" and how we respond to those who measure our 'whiteness' and our 'brownness'. here we're discussing: our experiences growing up in predominantly 'white' and 'brown' schools; whether we should accept these homogenous identities that are pushed upon us or perpetuated by ourselves; and how the gen z experience differs from millennials. come, join, get to know us and we can ponder on these thoughts together!
