Tune in to hear the incredible tips Mark has for small business owners!

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    • [4:50] What got Mark into the small business lending industry?
    • [7:43] When should small business owners start thinking about lines of credit and building bridges for cash flow?
    • [11:34] How should a small business manage their finances in the early years?
    • [13:01] Is underfunding one of the major reasons for businesses not making it past the first couple years?
    • [17:25] What is Mark’s outlook on people starting a business as a side hustle versus jumping right in.
    • [21:34] How can you keep the love of your business going while realizing your role will shift as the business grows?
    • [23:07] How has Mark seen businesses transform as they grow?
    • [25:40] What are some of the biggest mistakes that Mark has seen when businesses are trying to secure financing?
    • [28:27] What is the difference between a bank and a credit union?
    • [31:04] How do emotional decisions impact financial decisions?
    • [33:50] What is Mark’s best advice for partnering with a credit union locally to you?

    • KEY TAKEAWAYS:

      • [20:52] If you don’t have foundational basics and the kindergarten-level-concepts of doing everything right, treat people nicely, make yourself happy, make your clients happy, and focus on those kindergarten level concepts, everything else just falls apart.
      • [23:25] Many people start their business on one path and then grow in or shift in a different direction, and that’s ok. You can change your vision and your direction, but you must allow yourself to grow and not be held back by your original vision.
      • [26:00] There are so many different banks and credit unions out there that offer different support. Make sure that who you get financed through specializes in small business support and that you are their ideal customer, or it can be a death spiral for your business. Find a bank that needs you just as much as you need them.

                        KEY TAKEAWAYS:

                        • [13:49] You must have a pulse on the finances of your business. If you just hire a bookkeeper and expect that they’ve got it all handled, there is the huge potential to miss something. If you are going to own a business, you need to learn to love your numbers and own the financials of your business. Also, always have a separate CPA that reviews the books to ensure nothing is going missing.
                        • [17:07] There are only two ways to increase profitability in your business. The first is to increase margin, meaning increasing prices, and the second is to decrease expenses.
                        • [20:03] Your business should have 5 financial accounts – an income account, a profit account, an owner’s pay account, a tax account, and an operating expense account. The book, Profit First by Mike Michalowicz can help you to understand what goes in each account and how to allocate money.

                          BIO:

Former flight attendant turned entrepreneur, Danielle Mulvey currently runs multiple businesses with over $50-million in annual revenues and is such a geek about Profit First: The DIY Cash Management System for Businesses – that she is Mike Michalowicz’ #1 recommended go-to Workshop Facilitator and Keynote Presenter when his schedule is booked.

Maybe even more exciting….Mike and Danielle are currently collaborating on his next book, ALL IN: How to Get Your Employees to Act Like Owners. This collaboration tackles the biggest challenge to the profitability of businesses with employees – their payroll expenses being weighed down by average, ho-hum or worse employees who “collect a paycheck” and provide no measurable results or return on their salaries.

Based on her 25 years-plus of being an entrepreneur, Danielle has cracked the code on how to recruit, hire and retain 5-Star Employees and is the originator of The 5-Star Star Employee Rating System™ – a personalized and customizable DIY process to objectively hire the top 15% of available talent for the given role while filtering out the average, ho-hum or worse candidates.

                                    • [9:04] What are some of the most important things that a business needs to be aware of when they’re starting out?
                                    • [15:30] Why would you need a contract in your business and what are the different types of contracts?
                                    • [19:06] What is an attorney fee clause?
                                    • [28:25] How can you reach Peter for legal assistance?
                                    • [30:15] Do you need a certain type of attorney to support your business?
                                    •  [30:47] How do contracts differ and can you use a generic contact you find online?

                                    •

                                      KEY TAKEAWAYS:

                                      • People’s biggest mistake is they think if they own the business and they’re the only owner of the business and it’s a corporation LLC, then they can just go ahead and pay for everything they want because it’s their personal account. You can’t do that.
                                      • There are written contacts and oral contracts. Both are valid the majority of the time, but you do have more bargaining power if the contract is written out and signed by both parties.
                                      • If you cannot afford an attorney to create a contract, at the very least write down everything you want in the contract and make sure it is specifically stated. Include what the transaction is, what the most important part of the deal is, what money is being exchanged, what terminates the contract etc.

                                          KEY TAKEAWAYS:

                                          • Human design can be beneficial by learning the strategies, strengths and weaknesses that a person can have. By knowing their design and prioritizing their training to meet their personality type, you can empower them to be their best.
                                          • A business plan is important, but don’t get too attached to it, as it will change down the road due to shifts in the market and business directions. Work on it constantly, adding your ideas and altering it as things shift in the market and world.

                                            • KEY TAKEAWAYS:

                                              • If you are buying a link you need to make sure the quality of the links that you are buying is reasonable and not a scam.
                                              • Put the keyword in the first paragraph, the last paragraph and at least 1 heading on the page. Any more than that for keyword usage could get your page flagged.
                                              • SEO has to be used all the time and it’s got to be used within every blog post you write. If you don’t have the skills, you’re going to have to hire someone to at least consult with you and teach you how to do it or to do it, do it for you.

                                              • BIO:

I’ve never believed that quality should be expensive; which is why I started TwoFeetMarketing. My adventure started at University. After studying BA Management and Mathematics, I took an MSc in Management where I specialized in Marketing and Human Resources.

During my early career, I worked in recruitment and human resources and ran a CV writing company, Avid CVs. I’ve also spent time learning to be a professional digital marketer. Early in my marketing career, I advised people how to market themselves online after setting up my own author blog.

In July 2013, I took the skills I had learned and began offering online marketing services to businesses. I kept to my original beliefs – quality does not have to be expensive, and continually offered great services at affordable prices.

I have a mixture of clients from solopreneurs to large organizations. I expand brand awareness while increasing website visits, generating leads and sales. My SEO skills are good. Companies that have used my SEO skills have seen their rank skyrocket, and even small businesses have found themselves competing with, and in many cases ranking higher than big industry leaders.

In 2017, I was a finalist for the best business blog award in the Essex Digital Awards.

I’m a dedicated father to three great children and husband. In my spare time, I look after my collection of animals including Geckos, Bearded Dragon, Kenyan Sand Boa, rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens. I can also be found walking around the fields several times a day with my dalmatian dog, April.

Feel free to reach out to me and connect. I would love to hear from you.
