Technical Sales and Industrial Marketing Tips | Ask Kyle on Q&A Monday

It’s Monday - you have questions, and Kyle has your answers for industrial sales and marketing!

Question 1: What industrial industries do you think should be posting their products on Instagram and why?

There is a lot you can be taking pictures and video content on and posting onto Instagram to generate buzz. Especially the cooler more energized aspects like machine shops, behind-the-scenes work, your product in action, anything with movement in it. If it’s cool, educational, and you think it will generate positive feedback, then post it. Some people have asked about TikTok, and much of what’s posted on that platform can be reposted and crossposted on Instagram too following the same format. There’s a large audience already on Instagram and as long as you post consistent content, it doesn’t take much to build an audience over a good period of time - don’t expect instant results!

Question 2: I’m new to the manufacturing industry. How should I go about cold calling?

Understand that most people don’t enjoy doing cold calls, and certainly, a lot more don’t like receiving them. Know that 9 out of 10 people you call will not have time for you to rattle off a pitch from your script about your company. Be direct and to the point in trying to get in touch with the decision maker. On top of brevity, inject some humor and lightheartedness as well so the cold call is not your typical awkward “cold” call as most of your prospects are used to receiving. See it as information gathering and a next step to setting up a more formal meeting to have a conversation with your prospect. A lot of times, you may not even get in touch with the person and be directed to voicemail if you’re lucky - always leave a voicemail if you have the option to. If people don’t answer, hang up, or don’t buy, don’t sulk and let it ruin your mindset for the rest of the day - always be calling!

Question 3: My blog posts are currently not ranking, should I be worried?

If you’re spending a lot of time on blog posts and they’re not gaining any traction, then you should be worrying. Whatever sort of content you are putting it should be worth your time that it is giving you more success for the effort you put in. Most of the time, it’s not the blog post itself, but the process around it; make sure your post is search friendly and the title is optimized for SEO (search engine optimization). This also includes your headings, and your tags, and making sure the keywords you are targeting have enough density within the article itself to help it rank further up the chain. As said before, don’t expect instant results, but if 2-3 months down the line it isn’t gaining traction then it’s time to see what is dragging it down and what you can do to re-index it.
