Ask Me About My Type 1 episodes

  • Ep.18 It's Not Always Sunny with Type 1
It's a star-studded episode this week, Dia-babies, as I sit down and talk into my laptop mic with actress, writer, and comedian Jennifer Bartels alongside our Type None guest and her boyfriend, Vance. In addition, to be the most famous of my guest, Jen is also the most recently diagnosed Type 1 I've had on yet and her story gives a really interesting and eye-opening look into the not so bright side of Type 1. The first few years after diagnosis can be hectic for anyone, but imagine having to do it in your 30s when you thought you had life pretty well figured out. Jen tells us what it's been like learning how to be her own pancreas for the past two years as she navigates auditions, exercise, and social situations while Vance talks to us about just how frustrating it is not even knowing what you don't know but how candy can now solve a lot of Jen's problems. So check your toxic positivity at the door, prepare for some cold hard truthy realness, and don't forget to duck and cover (you'll see what I mean) on this week's episode of Ask Me About My Type 1.Edited, Produced and Written by: Walt DrennanHosted by: Walt DrennanMusic by: Afterglow Studios

  • Ep.17 Back to School
Ask Me About My Type 1 is back for Season 2 Dia-Peoples!! It's been a long summer but I'm your host, Walt Drennan, and do I have a season premiere for you!! It's back to school season here at Ask Me About My Type 1 and in order to celebrate I thought there couldn't be anyone better to hear from than a Type 1 actually starting their first year of college. I invite on Type 1 guest Destin and her Type None roommate Bella who are both starting their freshman year of college TODAY!! Like literally they start classes today. Bella asks some big questions that get us talking about insulin pricing and health insurance practices (SPOILERS: Destin and I both hate them), Destin tells us about this really weird sounding melon diet she's thinking of starting that might cure her Type 1 (it won't), and I realize just how very old I am when I give Destin some outdated Type 1 college advice. The bell for the start of Season 2 is about to ring so grab your books and find a good seat because Ask Me About My Type 1 Season 2 is now officially in session!! For more information on how you or your Type 1 student can make things a little easier for themselves at school check out the resources at Beyond Type 1 here https://beyondtype1.org/school/ .Edited, Produced, and Written by: Walt DrennanHosted by: Walt DrennanMusic By: Afterglow Studios

The time has come to start ramping up so I can proceed to ramp back down for the end of Season One of Ask Me About My Type 1! The Season One Finale is coming at you in two parts and this week is all about Part 1 of the Where Are They Now Special. I'll be speaking with guests from episodes past to see what they've been getting up to since we last spoke and how all things life AND Type 1 are going. • Ep.14 Sex, Love, and Dating with Type 1
Oh hi, Dia-peoples! Ask Me About Type 1 is back this week to talk about all things sex, dating, and relationships with Type 1. And I've even called in a professional! Meet this week's Type None guest The Magnetic Woman herself: Lauren Joyce, a professional sex, love, and relationship coach. It's an entirely new perspective on all the questions we've all been asking:  Am I still attractive with my medical devices? What happens when Type 1 gets in the way of intimate times? When should I tell them about my Type 1!?!? And with world-renowned expertise to back it up! Friend of the show and the greatest dia-friend I've never met, Erika Young, joins me and we get real thoughtful with Lauren as she tells me what I SHOULD have done that one time back in college. I know I say it a lot, but this time the answers REALLY will shock you!LINKS:Beyond Type 1:  https://beyondtype1.org/finding-a-diabetes-mental-health-provider/ The Magnetic Woman Lauren Joyce:  http://themagneticwoman.com/

  • Ep.13 Ximena and Scarlet
It's another new episode of Ask Me About My Type 1 and as always the Q's and A's are just waiting for you to listen in! This week I have on Type 1 guest Ximena (listen in to learn how to pronounce it) and her Type None best friend Scarlet Tune to teach you all about Type 1ing the way they do it in Venezuela. Ximena tells us all about how Type 1 camp turned her entire attitude about her Type 1 around, attitudes toward Diabetes in Venezuela, and what Ximena ended up doing when pharmacies in Venezuela started running out of Insulin for months at a time. Scarlet also tells me what it was like when Ximena made her go to Type 1 camp one summer and how her best friend's social media is helping her understand Type 1. Ask Me About My Type 1 is totally international for Episode 12, folks because all three of us were calling in from completely different countries this time around! That's nothing y'all would notice really though...just really wanted to mention it. Edited, Produced, and Written by: Walt DrennanHosted by: Walt DrennanMusic by: Afterglow Studios LINKST1 International Home Page: https://www.t1international.com/ KHN Article: Americans Cross Border...:  https://khn.org/news/americans-cross-border-into-mexico-to-buy-insulin-at-a-fraction-of-u-s-cost/

  • Ep.12 Maggie and Lucy
It's a Blehar family episode of Ask Me About My Type 1 this time around as I have on friend of the show and Type 1 guest from Episode 1, Maggie, and her sister Lucy. I hear Maggie's diagnosis story again but this time from Lucy's perspective and her initial thoughts after learning about her big sister's diagnosis. Lucy comes in with some high quality Q's that get Maggie and I thinking about just how much of our brains are dedicated to Type 1 management and how the rest of Life fits in. We also get into our thoughts on the annoyingly ignorant portrayal of Type 1 and Diabetes that are "Diabetes jokes" (#dobetterjimmy) and Lucy tells us how she hopes to fix it. And did I mention that the banger intro track you're about to hear was produced by Maggie and Lucy's brother Sam? It's a very Blehar episode this Monday, Type 1s and Type Nones and you are not going to want to miss it! Edited, Produced, and Written by: Walt DrennanHosted by: Walt DrennanMusic by: Afterglow Studious

  • Ep.10 Erica, Caitlyn, and Perri
We're talking about bikes today on Ask Me About My Type 1 and how a series of bike tours helped me develop a much healthier relationship with my Type 1. This episode features three guests and they all have one very unique experience in common: they've all biked across the country with me! I interview my teammates from rides past and learn what biking for 80 and 70 days straight respectively with me and my Type 1 was like for my Type None teammates, Erica and Caitlyn, while my Type 1 teammate Perri and I talk about that one time we biked to San Francisco with 18 other Type 1s on a team called Bike Beyond.  LinksBike and Build:  https://bikeandbuild.org/ The 4K for Cancer:  https://4kforcancer.org/ Bike Beyond:  https://beyondtype1.org/bike-beyond/ Bike Beyond: The Documentary (Trailer):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9-yspGRXg8&t=13s Edited, Produced, and Written by: Walt DrennanHosted by: Walt DrennanMusic by: Afterglow Studios
