In "The Highest Height of Christian Experience," Pastor Robert McNutt continues his exposition of Romans 8, arriving at verse 16: "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." Having shown that those led by the Spirit are sons (v. 14) and that believers have received the Spirit of adoption rather than slavery (v. 15), he presents verse 16 as the ultimate step in the chapter's teaching on assurance. He contrasts this with Roman Catholic teaching that no believer can be certain of salvation, and notes that assurance was the great emphasis of the Great Awakenings. Examining the text, he stresses that it is the Spirit Himself, the third Person of the Trinity, who bears joint witness with our spirit. "Sons" speaks of our legal position and "children" of our relationship: two sides of one coin, not two classes of believers (Galatians 3:26, 4:6-7). He identifies this witness with the sealing of the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). Interpreting Scripture with Scripture, he traces Christ's promise of rivers of living water (John 7:37-39) back to the water from the rock at Massah and Meribah, where Israel asked, "Is the Lord among us or not?" (Exodus 17:7). God answers that question in the believer by His Spirit, pouring His love into our hearts (Romans 5:5) and making the assured Christian a channel of blessing to others. He closes by calling all to repent and trust Christ's finished work, and to know for certain that they have eternal life.
