WALLABY Pilot Survey: HI gas kinematics of galaxy pairs in cluster environment by Shin-Jeong Kim et al. on Tuesday 29 November

We examine the HI gas kinematics of galaxy pairs in two clusters and a group

using Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) WALLABY pilot survey

observations. We compare the HI properties of galaxy pair candidates in the

Hydra I and Norma clusters, and the NGC 4636 group, with those of non-paired

control galaxies selected in the same fields. We perform HI profile

decomposition of the sample galaxies using a tool, {\sc baygaud} which allows

us to de-blend a line-of-sight velocity profile with an optimal number of

Gaussian components. We construct HI super-profiles of the sample galaxies via

stacking of their line profiles after aligning the central velocities. We fit a

double Gaussian model to the super-profiles and classify them as kinematically

narrow and broad components with respect to their velocity dispersions.

Additionally, we investigate the gravitational instability of HI gas disks of

the sample galaxies using Toomre Q parameters and HI morphological

disturbances. We investigate the effect of the cluster environment on the HI

properties of galaxy pairs by dividing the cluster environment into three

subcluster regions (i.e., outskirts, infalling and central regions). We find

that the denser cluster environment (i.e., infalling and central regions) is

likely to impact the HI gas properties of galaxies in a way of decreasing the

amplitude of the kinematically narrow HI gas

($M_{\rm{narrow}}^{\rm{HI}}$/$M_{\rm{total}}^{\rm{HI}}$), and increasing the

Toomre Q values of the infalling and central galaxies. This tendency is likely

to be more enhanced for galaxy pairs in the cluster environment.

Separating the blue cloud and the red sequence using Otsu's method for image segmentation by Biswajit Pandey. on Tuesday 29 November

The observed colour bimodality allows a classification of the galaxies into

two distinct classes: the `blue cloud' and the `red sequence'. Such

classification is often carried out using empirical cuts in colour and other

galaxy properties that lack solid mathematical justifications. We propose a

method for separating the galaxies in the `blue cloud' and the `red sequence'

using Otsu's thresholding technique for image segmentation. We show that this

technique provides a robust and parameter-free method for the classification of

the red and blue galaxies based on the minimization of the inter-class variance

and maximization of the intra-class variance. We also apply an iterative

triclass thresholding technique based on Otsu's method to improve the

classification. The same method can also be applied to classify the galaxies

based on their physical properties, such as star formation rate, stellar mass

function, bulge-to-disk mass ratio and age, all of which have bimodal

distributions.

Energy transfer and restructuring in amorphous solid water upon consecutive irradiation by Herma M. Cuppen et al. on Tuesday 29 November

Interstellar and cometary ices play an important role in the formation of

planetary systems around young stars. Their main constituent is amorphous solid

water (ASW). Although ASW is widely studied, vibrational energy dissipation and

structural changes due to vibrational excitation are less well understood. The

hydrogen-bonding network is likely a crucial component in this. Here we present

experimental results on hydrogen-bonding changes in ASW induced by the intense,

nearly monochromatic mid-IR free-electron laser (FEL) radiation of the FELIX-2

beamline at the HFML-FELIX facility at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the

Netherlands. Structural changes in ASW are monitored by reflection-absorption

infrared spectroscopy and depend on the irradiation history of the ice. The

experiments show that FEL irradiation can induce changes in the local

neighborhood of the excited molecules due to energy transfer. Molecular

Dynamics simulations confirm this picture: vibrationally excited molecules can

reorient for a more optimal tetrahedral surrounding without breaking existing

hydrogen bonds. The vibrational energy can transfer through the

hydrogen-bonding network to water molecules that have the same vibrational

frequency. We hence expect a reduced energy dissipation in amorphous material

with respect to crystalline material due to the inhomogeneity in vibrational

frequencies as well as the presence of specific hydrogen-bonding defect sites

which can also hamper the energy transfer.

JWST NIRCam Observations of Stars and HII Regions in z simeq 6-8 Galaxies: Properties of Star Forming Complexes on 150 pc Scales by Zuyi Chen et al. on Monday 28 November

The onset of the {\it JWST}-era provides a much-improved opportunity to

characterize the resolved structure of early star forming systems. Previous

{\it Spitzer} observations of $z\gtrsim 6$ galaxies revealed the presence of

old stars and luminous HII regions (via [OIII]+H$\beta$ emission), but the poor

resolution stunted our ability to map their locations with respect to the star

forming regions identified in the rest-UV. In this paper, we investigate the

internal structure of 12 of the most luminous $z\simeq 6-8$ galaxies in the EGS

field observed with recent {\it JWST}/NIRCam imaging. The systems appear clumpy

in the rest-UV, with more than half of the light coming from $\simeq 10^7$ to

10$^{9}$ M$_\odot$ star forming complexes that are $\simeq 150$ - 480 pc in

size. The clumps tend to be dominated by young stars (median = 36 Myr), but we

also find large variations in clump ages within individual galaxies. The

[OIII]+H$\beta$ EW varies significantly across individual galaxies (reflecting

differences in stellar and gas properties), but the HII regions largely track

the UV-bright complexes. Perhaps surprisingly, the rest-optical continuum is

just as clumpy as the UV, and we do not find older (and redder) nuclear stellar

components that were previously undetected or faint in the UV. The majority of

A Comprehensive Study on Galaxies at z~9-16 Found in the Early JWST Data: UV Luminosity Functions and Cosmic Star-Formation History at the Pre-Reionization Epoch by Yuichi Harikane et al. on Monday 28 November

We conduct a comprehensive study on dropout galaxy candidates at $z\sim9-16$

using the first 90 arcmin$^2$ JWST/NIRCam images taken by the early release

observations (ERO) and early release science (ERS) programs. With the JWST

simulation images, we find that a number of foreground interlopers are selected

with a weak photo-$z$ determination ($\Delta\chi^2>4$). We thus carefully apply

a secure photo-$z$ selection criterion ($\Delta\chi^2>9$) and conventional

color criteria with confirmations of the ERO NIRSpec spectroscopic redshifts,

and obtain a total of 23 dropout galaxies at $z\sim9-16$, including two

candidates at $z_\mathrm{phot}=16.25_{-0.46}^{+0.24}$ and

$16.41_{-0.55}^{+0.66}$. We perform thorough comparisons of dropout galaxies

found in our work with recent JWST studies, and conclude that our galaxy sample

is reliable enough for statistical analyses. We derive the UV luminosity

functions at $z\sim9-16$, and confirm that our UV luminosity functions at

$z\sim 9$ and $12$ agree with those determined by other HST and JWST studies.

The cosmic star-formation rate density decreases from $z\sim9$ to $12$, and

perhaps to $16$, but the densities at $z\sim12-16$ are higher than the constant

star formation efficiency model. Interestingly, there are six bright galaxy

candidates at $z\sim10-16$ with $M_\mathrm{UV}<-19.5$ mag and $M_*\sim10^{8-9}

M_\odot$. Because a majority ($\sim80$\%) of these galaxies show no signatures

of AGNs in their morphologies, the high cosmic star-formation rate densities

and the existence of these UV-luminous galaxies are explained by no suppression

of star-formation by the UV background radiation at the pre-reionization epoch

and/or an efficient UV radiation production by a top-heavy IMF with Population

III-like star formation.

PHANGS-JWST First Results: A combined HST and JWST analysis of the nuclear star cluster in NGC 628 by Nils Hoyer et al. on Monday 28 November

We combine archival HST and new JWST imaging data, covering the ultraviolet

to mid-infrared regime, to morphologically analyze the nuclear star cluster

(NSC) of NGC 628, a grand-design spiral galaxy. The cluster is located in a 200

pc x 400 pc cavity, lacking both dust and gas. We find roughly constant values

for the effective radius (r_eff ~ 5 pc) and ellipticity ({\epsilon} ~ 0.05),

while the S\'ersic index (n) and position angle (PA) drop from n ~ 3 to ~ 2 and

PA ~ 130{\deg} to 90{\deg}, respectively. In the mid-infrared, r_eff ~ 12pc,

{\epsilon} ~ 0.4, and n ~ 1-1.5, with the same PA ~ 90{\deg}. The NSC has a

stellar mass of log10 (M_nsc / M_Sun) = 7.06 +- 0.31, as derived through B-V,

confirmed when using multi-wavelength data, and in agreement with the

literature value. Fitting the spectral energy distribution, excluding the

mid-infrared data, yields a main stellar population's age of (8 +- 3) Gyr with

a metallicity of Z = 0.012 +- 0.006. There is no indication of any significant

star formation over the last few Gyr. Whether gas and dust were dynamically

kept out or evacuated from the central cavity remains unclear. The best-fit

suggests an excess of flux in the mid-infrared bands, with further indications

that the center of the mid-infrared structure is displaced with respect to the

optical center of the NSC. We discuss five potential scenarios, none of them

fully explaining both the observed photometry and structure.

Galaxies with Abnormally High Gas Content in the Disk by Anatoly. V. Zasov et al. on Monday 28 November

The content of gas in galaxies with an anomalously high relative mass of

hydrogen $M_{HI}/M_*$ for a given mass of the stellar population $M_*$

(VHR-galaxies) is considered, using the available samples of such galaxies. It

is shown that, within the optical diameter $D_{25}$, the mass of HI in VHR

galaxies, as well as in galaxies with "normal" HI content, is limited by a

value that depends on the specific angular momentum of the disk. Outer gaseous

disks beyond $D_{25}$, which contain the main amount of HI in most of the

galaxies we consider, are gravitationally stable, and, as a rule, they retain

an approximately constant value of the stability parameter $Q_{gas}$ over a

large range of radial distances. It allows to propose that the outer disks of

VHR galaxies are not recently acquired, but are of great age, and their

gravitational instability was the main regulator of star formation during their

formation. In this case, the extended disks of galaxies should also include a

low-brightness stellar components of old stars extending far beyond their

optical diameter $D_{25}$.

Multiple gas phases in supernova remnant IC 443: mapping shocked H 2 with VLT KMOS by Yunwei Deng et al. on Monday 28 November

Supernovae and their remnants provide energetic feedback to the ambient

interstellar medium (ISM), which is often distributed in multiple gas phases.

Among them, warm molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) often dominates the cooling of the

shocked molecular ISM, which has been observed with the H$_2$ emission lines at

near-infrared wavelengths. Such studies, however, were either limited in narrow

filter imaging or sparsely sampled mid-infrared spectroscopic observations with

relatively poor angular resolutions. Here we present near-infrared ($H$- and

$K$-band) spectroscopic mosaic observations towards the A, B, C, and G regions

of the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443, with the K-band Multi-Object

Spectrograph (KMOS) onboard the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detected 20

ro-vibrational transitions of H$_2$, one H line (Br$\gamma$), and two [Fe II]

lines, which dominate broadband images at both $H$- and $K$-band. The spatial

distribution of H$_2$ lines at all regions are clumpy on scales from $\sim 0.1$

pc down to $\sim 0.008$ pc. The fitted excitation temperature of H$_2$ is

between 1500 K and 2500 K, indicating warm shocked gas in these regions. The

multi-gas-phase comparison shows stratified shock structures in all regions,

which explains the co-existence of multiple types of shocks in the same

regions. Last, we verify the candidates of young stellar objects previously

identified in these regions with our spectroscopic data, and find none of them

are associated with young stars. This sets challenges to the previously

proposed scenario of triggered star formation by SNR shocks in IC~443.

The giant low surface brightness galaxy Malin 1: new constraints for its molecular gas mass from GBT ARGUS observations by Gaspar Galaz et al. on Monday 28 November

We report on results from GBT/ARGUS $^{12}$CO(1-0) observations for the giant

low surface brightness galaxy Malin 1, which allow us to determine an upper

limit for its CO mass, and hence its molecular gas mass and molecular gas mass

surface density $\Sigma_{H_2}$. Although we performed very deep observations

through 17 hours on source integration time, reaching a noise level of $\sim

0.2$ mK (T$^{*}_{A}$) with a corresponding extended source CO limit (3$\sigma$)

of 0.09 K km s$^{-1}$, 19 times more sensitive than previous works, we do not

detect the $^{12}$CO(1-0) emission line. However, the observations allow us to

estimate an upper limit (3$\sigma$) for the CO mass of about $7.4 \times 10^9$

M$_\odot$ for the extended emission, and $1.4 \times 10^8$ M$_\odot$ for the

central part of the galaxy. With these figures we conclude that the molecular

gas surface density is lower than 0.3 M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$, and the

corresponding molecular to atomic gas mass ratio is lower than 0.13. The

evidence suggests a quite different physical conditions for the interstellar

medium in Malin 1 compared to that of normal, high surface brightness spirals.

This, in one way to another, keeps an usual molecular gas tracer as CO hidden

from our observations, in spite of the diverse stellar and structural

properties of Malin 1 observed by several authors since more than 30 years.

A Chemical Study of Nine Star-forming Regions with Evidence of Infall Motion by Yang Yang et al. on Monday 28 November

The study of the physical and chemical properties of gas infall motion in the

molecular clumps helps us understand the initial stages of star formation. We

used the FTS wide-sideband mode of the IRAM 30-m telescope to observe nine

infall sources with significant double peaked blue line profile. The

observation frequency range are 83.7 - 91.5 GHz and 99.4 - 107.2 GHz. We have

obtained numbers of molecular line data. Using XCLASS, a total of 7 to 27

different molecules and isotopic transition lines have been identified in these

nine sources, including carbon chain molecules such as CCH, c-C3H2 and HC3N.

According to the radiation transfer model, we estimated the rotation

temperatures and column densities of these sources. Chemical simulations

adopting a physical model of HMSFRs are used to fit the observed molecular

abundances. The comparison shows that most sources are in the early HMPO stage,

with the inner temperature around several ten K.
