I spoke recently on the development of the touch screen and how they have
become so prolific that they are a definite driver distraction – forget the mobile
phone the touchscreen is a good way to take your eyes off the road. So some
really sensible comment from the designer of the Apple iPod and iPhone Sir Jony
Ive who says that modern infotainment touch screens can’t match the tactile
feeling of physical buttons. The former Apple design chief claims new car buyers
will drive demand for physical buttons to return to automotive entertainment
systems. From my perspective they can’t come soon enough – the infotainment
touchscreen has become counter intuitive – unnecessarily complex, distractive
and downright dangerous if used on the move – simple moves from the turn of a
button or a dial are just so easy without taking your eyes off the road. I’m David
