Sheree Scott has devoted her life to helping the most vulnerable. This week on “At the Edge of It All”, Scott, the Director for Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Programs at USD, talked about what led her to health care. Following a career as a Navy corpsman, Scott got into academia, where she uses her knowledge and influence to help groups who are often overlooked by health care providers. She explained how she’s working to improve access and treatment for women and veterans, among others.

She is a passionate legal advocate whose path to law was shaped by a desire to help others, especially those navigating difficult family issues. She explains the vital work of the Women’s Legal Clinic, which offers free legal services for issues like divorce, custody and domestic violence. The need is growing, and for many, this support can be life-changing. She also discusses the risks of going to court without an attorney and how the clinic gives students hands-on experience while serving the community.

“At the Edge of It All” was joined by Sophia Baik, assistant professor of communication at USD. Baik is an expert in regulations of media and technology, and explained how our data is used by our favorite websites and apps. She talked about some of the privacy concerns associated with that, how some governments are working to protect consumers, and what individuals can do to surf the web responsibly.

This week, “At the Edge of It All” was joined by chair and professor of integrated engineering, Susan Lord. She discussed her background as a woman in engineering, and how she didn’t always feel like she fit in. Then she explains what integrated engineering is, and why she thinks it’s so important to mix the perspectives and context of the liberal arts with the technical science of engineering; how does that prepare students to be Changemakers?
