Buzzwords from psychobabble swarm around our culture and into our minds providing the illusion of sound diagnoses and vague one-size-fits-all advice:

• “I’m hardwired for risky behavior.”
• “You’re a Type A.”
• “I need to get closure and move on.”
• “You’re so sensitive; you must be an empath.”

Buzzwords are dangerous, because they usually stifle the very thing we need: careful thinking. In this episode Doug Newton uses the popular remedy for lack of intimacy (“be more vulnerable”) as a perfect example. But he doesn’t stop there.

As long as he’s at it, he shows the limitations of buzzword thinking by giving another path to intimacy that doesn’t require the popular path of self-disclosure. So whether you’ll enjoy busting a couple buzzwords or need some help finding intimacy in some of your relationships, this is an important episode for you.

Conflict continues to rage like wildfire over what’s happening at the southern border of the US. But in this episode I urge paying more attention to a different border crossing. Even though we usually try to attack prejudice in order to end racism and other isms like sexism, ageism or classisim, the source problem we should focus on is bigotry. What's the difference between the two? Is there a way to defeat bigotry, or at least weaken it? Yes.
