Being honest and actually caring about your customer is paramount to running a successful and long running business. Especially if you are a small local business. Word gets around quick if you are being a dishonest and mean person. Unless there is no where else that they can get their goods in town, then most likely those customers will leave you. Being honest applies to your marketing as well. Yes, a well-crafted phrase and catchy graphics might bring them in initially, however, if you were being outright tricky with your marketing offer from the start, customers will know and they are very unforgiving

This is more of a "how-to" than a theoretical approach

Creating events around your business is a great way to bring in people that may become new customers and or potentially refer new customers to you. When I ran the athletic club, my business partner and I decided that we wanted to start a big charity event for the town. Something that would benefit the town as a whole and also bring some good notoriety to us. Therefore, we started the Running for Moms 5k, we donated all of the profit to a local mother that was in need. We advertised this event all over town and also around the surrounding areas. We brought in as many vendors as we could to serve the runners and the crowd. Those vendors were the official sponsors of the race. Therefore, not only did we bring some good attention to our athletic club, we also created some business networking partners.
