In 2023, elite cyclist Jeff Seckendorf came on the show to share his quest to break the national velodrome hour record in the 70-74 age group. His goal was set, his training dialed, his eye was on the prize. But as so often happens in sports, and in life, deep into training he came to a staggering realization that lead to a massive pivot that you have to hear to believe.
If you're interested in learning more about Jeff's original goal, listen to his first visit to the show in an episode that was re-released on August 10, 2025.
Jeff completed his ride in support of Parkinson's Association of San Diego. If you would like to learn more or make a donation in his honor, visit Parkinson's Association of San Diego.

Jeff Seckendorf doesn't seem to have met a lot of sports where he didn't excel. His experiences range from land (ice climbing) to sea (scuba diving) to air (aerobatic flying) and have culminated in his current passion, the velodrome, where he rides his fixed gear, brake-less bike really, really fast. Jeff currently holds the hour record at the San Diego Velodrome and is now training for an attempt at breaking the national hour record in the 70-74 age group in 2025. In this episode he explains the appeal of this brutal race, how he stays motivated day in and day out, and how to find the fun in the every day.

When we conceived the topic for this microcast the idea was to talk about the differences for a coach working wth older athletes and younger athletes, or older people with Parkinson's who have to exercise and younger people, with or without Parkinson's, who want to exercise.
However, as the conversation developed, the apparent differences became less and less obvious.
Join Coach Tracey Jacobs, a cyclist having won world and national championships, and Jeff Seckendorf, age 70, coach and world record holder on the bike and Director of Operations at the Parkinson's Association of San Diego, as they unpack this seemingly simple topic.

Aging up. It's inevitable. But that does not have to stop us from diving. If you are working your way up to what we're calling Gen O/W, or Generation Older/Wiser, or you're diving with parents or grandparents or friends who have joined Gen O/W, then this episode is for you. Jeff (who is now officially Gen O/W) and Ben (who is getting closer) look at some of the options and ideas that will keep you diving well into your older years.

This is a short addendum to my previous carcast on quitting. In this quick episode I add a little info, this time about when it's okay to quit. There is a time and place for everything and sometimes the best thing is to "know when to fold 'em."

"Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, know when to run." Great words to live by. In this carcast, actually recorded as a "hikecast" during this year's solar eclipse, Jeff looks at some of the mental and physical elements of quitting – quitting a class, quitting a training path, quitting anything. But, more importantly, how to avoid some of the traps of quitting and what you can learn from teetering on the edge of "quit or succeed."

Back in 2020, as the Covid pandemic began, a few of us got together and started a company called Coach Me Strong, an individualized exercise coaching program for people with Parkinson's. One of the first things we said to anyone who called to learn more about Coach Me Strong was, "No matter what you previous career was, now that you are diagnosed with Parkinson's your new career is as a professional athlete."
This was not meant to be off-putting but rather to impress that, with Parkinson's, exercise is not an option...the same as with any professional athlete.
In this episode Sasha Graham, host of the podcast, Sports Will Save Us All, joins us to reflect on the hundreds of interviews she has done with professional and amateur athletes and coaches about the professional athlete's mindset.

Jeff Seckendorf shares his experience about discovering a new sense of purpose, and how this contributes to our longevity, health, and happiness. This is seen through the lens as an hour record holder in his age group at the San Diego Velodrome and at the World 6-hour Time Trial Championships.
Our guest for this Living to 100 Club Podcast is Jeff Seckendorf. At age 70, in about two years, Jeff will attempt to break a U.S. or international cycling hour record. Our guest shares with us his process-oriented training program, incorporating both mental and physical dimensions in his cycling competition. In addition, this conversation takes a close look at finding our sense of purpose, especially after a life change like retirement, separation or divorce, or other major event. We discuss the process of discovering a new purpose, especially through sports, and how finding your purpose contributes to longevity, health, and happiness. What can we learn from adopting a competitive spirit in our senior years? What is the Institute of Purpose that our guest has recently co-founded? And how do we discover a new sense of purpose in our lives?

Aging up does not mean slowing down. Over 10,000 people turn 65 in the U.S. alone and we can assume an equal number are hitting 70.
