The Libertarian Party has nominated Chase Oliver for president, rejecting former President Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after they each spoke at the party’s convention.

He talks with Atlanta News First reporter Patrick Quinn about his campaign.

Third parties have rarely been competitive in U.S. presidential elections and the Libertarian candidate four years ago won 1% of the vote. But the party’s decision is getting more attention this year due to the rematch between Trump and Democratic President Joe Biden, which could hinge again on small vote margins in a handful of contested states.

Libertarians prioritize small government and individual freedoms, with a mix of policy positions that could be seen as liberal, conservative or neither.

Oliver is an activist from Atlanta who previously ran for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House from Georgia. His campaign website calls for major cuts to the federal budget with an eye toward balancing the budget, the abolition of the death penalty, and the closure of all overseas military bases and ending of military support to Israel and Ukraine.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation shared new details in a decades-long cold case involving a University of Georgia student.

Tara Louise Baker, a 23-year-old law student, was found dead inside her off-campus apartment in 2001. Firefighters discovered her body after responding to a fire at the home.  An investigation determined that the blaze was set intentionally. 

Authorities are now announcing a break in the case.

 A new Georgia law will require cash bail for 30 additional crimes, including 18 that are sometimes misdemeanors. Gov. Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 63 and nine other new public safety measures.

Opponents said the bill would roll back changes that were passed almost unanimously in 2018 under then-Gov. Nathan Deal. That law allowed judges to release many people accused of misdemeanors without bail.
