  • E03: The Story Needs to Be Told: historian Leslie Heaphy

What a fantastic conversation with Leslie Heaphy. Leslie is professor of history at Kent State University and her research interests include twentieth century history and sports history. She is chairwoman of the Society for American Baseball Research Women in Baseball committee, editor of the Encyclopedia of Women in Baseball and edits the national journal on the Negro Leagues called Black Ball.

Leslie walked us through the long history of women in baseball, going back into the 18th and 19th centuries. We talked about why and how women were excluded from organized baseball and how softball rose up as an alternative. She shared with us stories of early women's teams and players as well as umpires and other pioneers and we both learned new facts that surprised us.

Leslie has advice for amateur researchers on how to get started discovering local women's baseball history and we talk about the importance of preserving the history being made right now.We ask Leslie if she thinks there is a future for women in baseball and how her work as an historian informs that future.

This is a great introduction to the rich history of women's baseball and we look forward to bringing you more of the story.

About Attagirl: women and girls in baseball

From the publisher's feed

We've all heard of "A League of Their Own" and "No Crying in Baseball," but did you know that women have been involved in baseball since its beginning? While women are and always have been baseball players, owners, coaches, umpires, and fans, after over 150 years women still face barriers in every level of organized baseball. Every year, thousands of girls join Little League teams, but then age out and don't find anywhere else to play. Thousands more don't join Little League in the first place because they don't know baseball is an option for girls.
