When music meets technology, things can get a little wild. Join host Caro C as she chats to two artists who are using recent advances in software and kit to take audio into previously unheard dimensions.
Vicky Clarke is training machine learning algorithms on the sounds of broken glass and industrial buildings to craft her own AI musique concrète, creating sounds and potential instruments that exist beyond the physics of our world. Meanwhile, Jung In Jung is using the Oculus Quest headset and her sound design skills to create a virtual reality space where musicians can find new ways to improvise.
How did they get to this point? And what do they hope will happen next? There’s only one way to find out…
Vicky Clarke is a Manchester-based sound and electronic media artist who works with sound sculpture, DIY electronic and human-machine systems. A winner of the 2020 Oram Awards, she is currently artist in residence with NOVARS, University of Manchester, and premiered Aura Machine, her first piece created using neural synthesis in June 2021. Her previous projects include working with researchers at the National Graphene Institute to develop a conductive graphene Ableton interface and co-founding Noise Orchestra.
Jung In Jung is a South Korean sound artist and postdoctoral researcher at Dundee’s InGAME centre. Her work uses hacked game controllers, virtual reality hardware and games software to explore the intimate relationships between sound, movement and space. Her recent project Sound Of Light offers players the chance to improvise and communicate through hand gestures in a VR environment, while her previous work has combined interactive technology with dance performance.

Aiwan Obinyan is a composer, film-maker and producer and the founder of AiAi Studios, a film and music production house specialising in documentaries. As well as her own productions Kenyan, Christian, Queer and Wax Print, her work includes the Small Axe podcast for BBC Sounds, and others made for Gal-Dem, Gay Times, Vice, Amazon and the UN Refugee Agency. She also created Audio Club’s own theme tune.
Emma Butt is a TV & film dubbing mixer, ADR recordist and sound editor whose credits include Game Of Thrones, Sex Education, Doctor Who and EastEnders. A vocal champion of greater diversity in the post-production audio industry, last year she produced a report, commissioned by the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity, highlighting the sharp race and gender imbalance in the sound departments of top-rated TV shows.

Grab a handful of leads and join us as we patch our signal into the world of modular synthesisers. If you’re only familiar with prebuilt synths, modular can seem like just a learning curve too far. But once you get to grips with them, they can be absorbing, endlessly adaptable…and perhaps a little addictive.
Host Caro C is joined by two guests who have caught the modular bug: music educator, composer and sound designer Dr Liz Dobson and musician and programmer Zoë Blade. They chat about what modular set-ups can offer, how to get started, where they can take your music… and what the toaster oven in Zoë’s garage has to do with step sequencers.
Dr Liz Dobson is an educator, composer and sound designer specialising in sonic art, sound design and music for moving image. As well as being Senior Lecturer in Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield, they co-founded Yorkshire Sound Women Network and are currently working with Irine Røsnes to create music linking violin and modular synth.
Zoë Blade is a Stoke-on-Trent based musician and programmer who has been releasing music ranging from electro and techno to ambient and synthpop for over a decade. Her music features on YouTubers Natalie Wynn’s ContraPoints channel and Harris Brewis’s HBomberguy channel, among other places. With her partner Nina Richards she runs Transistor Sound Labs, which designed the Stepper Acid step sequencer module.

In this episode, we’re slowing down, taking a moment to listen and talking about sound art. What is it, where might you find it and is it purely about sound or more about a state of mind?
Host Caro C is joined by two artists working with sound, Ryoko Akama and Amy Beeston. Ryoko is a Japanese-Korean artist and composer living in Huddersfield, who uses everyday items to create kinetic installations that are often driven invisibly by heat, magnetism or gravity. Amy is a Scottish sound artist and audio researcher living in Orkney, whose work explores nature and the environment in her island home. Together, they reflect upon an area of sonic creativity that starts with the world around you, and offer advice for tuning in to your own inner sound artist.
Ryoko Akama is a Japanese-Korean sound artist, musician and composer living in Huddersfield. She uses everyday items and pieces of scrap to create kinetic sculptures and installations, often driven invisibly by heat, magnetism or gravity and using an ‘almost nothing’ aesthetic to emphasise silence, time and space. She is artistic director of the arts organisation ame, which hosts roam festival from 9-18 September 2021. Exhibited internationally, her most recent show was We are on a balancing act at Errant Sound in Berlin.
Amy Beeston is a Scottish sound artist and audio researcher whose work explores aspects of nature and the environment in her home on the Orkney Islands. Her background combines sound art and science, with studies in music technology, sonology and machine listening. She co-founded Yorkshire Sound Women Network as well as the collective SONA, who have created and exhibited sound art together, including a soundscape made from and for a Sheffield cutlery factory. Her first solo exhibition, Stone Fringe Sound, took place in Stromness in 2019.

Does your love of music go further than listening to or making it? Host Caro C is joined by two guests who had an idea and didn’t wait for someone else to do it for them. Sophie Cooper has been putting on DIY gigs where she lives for nearly 20 years, while Liina Turtonen set up her own YouTube channel to explain music technology and now has more than 20,000 subscribers.
Sophie Cooper is a Todmorden-based musician and sound artist who records and performs both solo and in collaborations including Delphine Dora, Julian Bradley (as The Slowest Lift) and Kelly Jayne Jones. Commissioned by hcmf// 2019, her multichannel sound work Intact was nominated for an Ivors Composer Award. She’s been promoting DIY gigs for nearly 20 years and co-runs Tor Bookings, whose events include Tor Festival.
Liina ‘LNA’ Turtonen is a musician and producer living in York but originally from Naantali, Finland. She started the YouTube channel LNA Does Audio Stuff in 2019 in response to the lack of woman-led music tech channels and posts weekly with a mix of tutorials, gear reviews and fun production challenges. Having previously taught production at Leeds Conservatoire, she co-founded Equalize Music Production, which offers courses to women and non-binary people.

Ann Fomukong-Boden is a Chesterfield-based electronics engineer and social entrepreneur. She is director and co-founder of the social enterprise Kakou, which uses inclusive technology to design instruments that are accessible to all. Ann also volunteers as a STEM Ambassador, organising events and workshops to educate and inspire schools and communities about STEM.
Cat Scott is a Bradford-based artist and producer working with sound and multimedia inspired by STEM themes and processes. Her works include the 360° bubble dome Inner Horizons, created during a residency in South Korea; kinetic bubble installation The Abyssal Glow (with Joe Beedles) and In Transition, a kinetic sculpture for Light Night Leeds 2017.

Host Caro C is joined by guests Emily J Electric and Angel Lee to chat about digital audio workstations. Known as DAWs for short, these are the software packages that enable you to record and produce your own music.
Angel is a Leeds-based DJ and producer who uses Logic Pro, while Sheffield musician and educator Emily is a self-described fangirl of Ableton Live. Although each is ready to fight their corner for their DAW of choice, they also offer friendly advice on how to start with and get the best from these often dauntingly feature-packed tools – whichever one is right for you.
Emily J Electric is a Sheffield-based musician and DJ who performs with electronic music, live flute and EWI (electronic wind instrument). She runs Sheffield Ableton User Group as well as working as a music leader and is the co-founder of Equalize Music Production, an organisation offering production, songwriting and performance courses to women and gender minorities.
Angel Lee is a Leeds-based DJ and producer/composer specialising in disco and house. With more than 20 years’ involvement in the Leeds nightlife scene, she has several residencies across the city and a weekly show on Select Radio. She is also experienced in sound design, with an MA in Music for the Moving Image.

While Laura can often be found holding a boom on TV and film sets, Hayley uses field recordings ranging from nature sounds to oral histories to compose her pieces. Together, they chat creativity, careers, gear tips and what they love most about listening through a mic.
Laura Clough is an audio professional based in London who has worked as a sound assistant on a range of productions, including the TV dramas Peaky Blinders, COBRA, Des and Humans and the forthcoming film Benediction. She also worked as a sound trainee on Phantom Thread and Holmes & Watson.
Hayley Suviste is a Manchester-based sound artist who uses field recordings, interviews, electronics and live instruments to create compositions, sound installations and multimedia pieces. Her commissions include work created for Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and the Centre For Contemporary Chinese Art; she is one of the six composers selected for YSWN’s Sound Pioneers Project and assistant producer for the first Sound Of The Year Awards.
