SORAT’H, FIFTH MEHL:

I have been blessed with peace, pleasure, bliss, and the celestial sound current, gazing upon the feet of God. The Savior has saved His child, and the True Guru has cured his fever. || 1 || I have been saved, in the True Guru’s Sanctuary; service to Him does not go in vain. || 1 || Pause || There is peace within the home of one’s heart, and there is peace outside as well, when God becomes kind and compassionate. O Nanak, no obstacles block my way; my God has become gracious and merciful to me. || 2 || 12 || 40 ||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਸੂਖ ਮੰਗਲ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੈ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਬਾਰਿਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤਾਪੁ ਉਤਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਜਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਖ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਸੂਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਊ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹੋਆ ਕਿਰਪਾਲਾ ॥੨॥੧੨॥੪੦॥।

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ, ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਰੁਕਾਵਟਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।ਰਹਾਉ।

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਤਾਪ (ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼) ਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਬਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਘਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਉਂ ਬਚਾਇਆ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਿਤਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) । (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਖ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਆਨੰਦ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੀ ਰੌ ਚੱਲ ਪਈ।੧।

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬਾਹਰ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਣ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ) ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ, ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।੧੨।੪੦।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਪੁੱਤਰ—ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ । ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਦਾ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਸੋ, ਇਹ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ) ।੧। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ) ਸਾਡਾ ਕੋਈ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਚੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ । ਸਾਡਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਾਡਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਸਾਡਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਨਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ) ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ) ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਸ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੰਮ-ਕਾਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਥੋਂ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਸੀ ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ।੪। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੫।੧।੭।੧੬।

English Translation

ONE UNIVERSAL CREATOR GOD. BY THE GRACE OF THE TRUE GURU:

GUJRI, FOURTH MEHL, THIRD HOUSE:

Mother, father and sons are all made by the Lord; the relationships of all are established by the Lord. || 1 || I have given up all my strength, O my brother. The mind and body belong to the Lord, and the human body is entirely under His control. || 1 || Pause || The Lord Himself infuses devotion into His humble devotees. In the midst of family life, they remain unattached. || 2 || When inner love is established with the Lord, then whatever one does, is pleasing to my Lord God. || 3 || I do those deeds and tasks which the Lord has set me to; I do that which He makes me to do. || 4 || Those whose devotional worship is pleasing to my God — O Nanak, those humble beings center their minds lovingly on the Lord’s Name. || 5 || 1|| 7 ||16 ||

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਅਰਾ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਕੁ ਖੀਰ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਮਨ ਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਸਨਕ ਸਨੰਦਨ ਨਾਰਦ ਮੁਨਿ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਜਨ ਆਏ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ ਅਲਖ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥ ਸਭਿ ਜਾਚਿਕ ਤੂ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਹਾਥ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਊਤਮ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਆਰੀ ॥ ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਕੇਰਾ ਆਪਿ ਤਰੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੪॥ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੋਹ ਗੁਬਾਰੀ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ਓਇ ਡੂਬੇ ਸਣੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੀ ॥੫॥ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ਓਹੁ ਮਲਭਖੁ ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਰੀ ॥੬॥ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਸੂਤੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੁਗ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੂਤੁ ਖਿੰਚੈ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੭॥ ਰਸਨਿ ਰਸਨਿ ਰਸਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਗਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥੮॥੧॥੭॥

English Translation

GUJRI, FOURTH MEHL, SECOND HOUSE:

ONE UNIVERSAL CREATOR GOD. BY THE GRACE OF THE TRUE GURU:

Without the Lord, my soul cannot survive, like an infant without milk. The inaccessible and incomprehensible Lord God is obtained by the Gurmukh; I am a sacrifice to my True Guru. || 1 || O my mind, the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praise is a boat to carry you across. The Gurmukhs obtain the Ambrosial Water of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. You bless them with Your Grace. || Pause || Sanak, Sanandan and Naarad the sage serve You; night and day, they continue to chant Your Name, O Lord of the jungle. Slave Prahlaad sought Your Sanctuary, and You saved his honor. || 2 || The One unseen immaculate Lord is pervading everywhere, as is the Light of the Lord. All are beggars, You alone are the Great Giver. Reaching out our hands, we beg from You. || 3 || The speech of the humble devotees is sublime; they sing continually the wondrous, Unspoken Speech of the Lord. Their lives become fruitful; they save themselves, and all their generations. || 4 || The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in duality and evil-mindedness; within them is the darkness of attachment. They do not love the sermon of the humble Saints, and they are drowned along with their families. || 5 || By slandering, the slanderer washes the filth off others; he is an eater of filth, and a worshipper of Maya. He indulges in the slander of the humble Saints; he is neither on this shore, nor the shore beyond. || 6 || All this worldly drama is set in motion by the Creator Lord; He has infused His almighty strength into all. The thread of the One Lord runs through the world; when He pulls out this thread, the One Creator alone remains. || 7 || With their tongues, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and savor Them. They place the sublime essence of the Lord upon their tongues, and savor it. O Nanak, other than the Lord, I ask for nothing else; I am in love with the Love of the Lord’s sublime essence. || 8 || 1 || 7 ||

ਬਿਹਾਗੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਨੑ ਕਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜਿਨੑ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਜਿਨ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਤਿਨ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਜੈਕਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਸਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਭਲੇ ਸੋਭਨੀਕ ਹਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਸੋ ਸੀਸੁ ਭਲਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਵਨੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਜਾਇ ਲਗੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੈਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥੨॥ ਤੇ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਭਲੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਤੇ ਹਸਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਖਹਿ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਪਗ ਨਿਤ ਪੂਜੀਅਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਧਰਮ ਚਲੇਸਹਿ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨੇਸਹਿ ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥ ਧਰਤਿ ਪਾਤਾਲੁ ਆਕਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸਭ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਵਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਸਭੁ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਰਾਮ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਪੈਨੑਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵੈ ਰਾਮ ॥੪॥੪॥

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਆਖ – ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ । ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੱਕੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਟਿਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਜਹਿਰ ਭਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕ-ਮਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਸੋਭਾ- ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਆਖ- ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ !ਉਹ ਜੀਭ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਆਖ- ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਉਹ ਕੰਨ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਉਹ ਸਿਰ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਹੈ ।੨।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਉਹ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਭਲੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਸਫਲ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਹੱਥ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਪੈਰ ਸਦਾ ਪੂਜੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਪੈਰ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਨਾਨਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ , ਜੀਵਨ-ਅਧਾਰ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੩।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਧਰਤੀ, ਪਾਤਾਲ, ਆਕਾਸ਼-ਹਰੇਕ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਹਵਾ, ਪਾਣੀ, ਅੱਗ-ਹਰੇਕ ਤੱਤ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਗੀਤ ਗਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਜੰਗਲ, ਘਾਹ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਆਖ- ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸਤਕਾਰੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੪।੪।

English Translation

BIHAAGRAA, FOURTH MEHL:

I am a sacrifice, O my soul, to those who take the Support of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. The Guru, the True Guru, implanted the Name within me, O my soul; He has carried me across the terrifying world-ocean of poison. Those who have single-mindedly meditated on the Lord, O my soul — I proclaim the victory of those saintly beings. Nanak has found peace, meditating on the Lord, O my soul; the Lord is the Destroyer of all pain. || 1 || Blessed, blessed is that tongue, O my soul, which sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord God. Sublime and splendid are those ears, O my soul, which listen to the Kirtan of the Your Praises, O Lord. Sublime, pure and sacred is that head, O my soul, which falls at the Guru’s feet. Nanak is a sacrifice to the Guru, O my soul, who has placed the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in my consciousness. || 2 || Blessed and approved are those eyes, O my soul, which gaze upon the Holy True Guru. Sacred and pure are those hands, O my soul, which write the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. I worship continually the feet of that humble being, O my soul, who walks on the Path of Dharma, the path of righteousness. Nanak is a sacrifice to those, O my soul, who hear of the Lord, and believe in the Lord’s Name. || 3 || The earth, the nether regions of the underworld, and the Akaashic ethers, O my soul, all meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Wind, water and fire, O my soul, continually sing the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har. The woods, the meadows and the whole creation, O my soul, meditate with their mouths on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. O Nanak, one who, as Gurmukh, focuses his consciousness on the Lord’s devotional worship, O my soul, is robed in honor in the Court of the Lord. || 4 || 4 ||

ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਦਰਸਨ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਕੋਮਲ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਜਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਜਪਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੧।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁਕਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।੨।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ, ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨੀ, ਆਚਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਰੱਖਣਾ-ਇਹ ਮੈਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ।੩।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ) ਇਹ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲੈ, ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈ।੪।੧੨।੧੮।

Within my heart, I meditate on the Word of the Guru’s Teachings. With my tongue, I chant the Chant of the Lord. || 1 || The image of His vision is fruitful; I am a sacrifice to it. His Lotus Feet are the Support of the mind, the Support of the very breath of life. || 1 || Pause || In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the cycle of birth and death is ended. To hear the Ambrosial Sermon is the support of my ears. || 2 || I have renounced sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment. ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ ਠਾਢਿ ਪਾਈ ਕਰਤਾਰੇ ॥ ਤਾਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਰਵਾਰੇ ॥ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਹੈ ਰਾਖੀ ॥ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਤਾਕੀ ॥੧॥ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਆ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਉਪਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਾਲਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਓ ਦਾਰੂ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਗਲਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਬਿਦਾਰੂ ॥ ਅਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਬਾਤ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅਪਨਾ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਸਮਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਹਮਰਾ ਗੁਣੁ ਅਵਗੁਣੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਇਓ ਸਾਖੀ ॥ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਲਾਜ ਰਾਖੀ ॥੩॥ ਬੋਲਾਇਆ ਬੋਲੀ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੇਰਾ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਖੀ ॥ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਾਖੀ ॥੪॥੬॥੫੬॥  ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।ਰਹਾਉ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਠੰਡ ਵਰਤਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਤਾਪ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਤੱਕ ਲਿਆ।੧। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵਿਕਾਰ-ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਦਵਾਈ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਉਸ ਨਾਮ-ਦਾਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰ-) ਰੋਗ ਕੱਟ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਬਣਾ ਲਈ (ਆਪਣਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਲਿਆ) ।੨। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਸਦਾ ਹੀ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮੁੱਢ-ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਦੇ (ਪਿਆਰ ਵਾਲੇ) ਸੁਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਸਾਡਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਜਾਂ ਔਗੁਣ ਦਿਲ ਤੇ ਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ। (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾਇਆ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲਈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਢਹੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ) ।੩। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ। ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ, ਇਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਹਾਮੀ ਭਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ (ਸਦਾ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ।੪।੬।੫੬।  SORAT’H, FIFTH MEHL:  The Creator has brought utter peace to my home; the fever has left my family. The Perfect Guru has saved us. I sought the Sanctuary of the True Lord. || 1 || The Transcendent Lord Himself has become my Protector. Tranquility, intuitive peace and poise welled up in an instant, and my mind was comforted forever. || Pause || The Lord, Har, Har, gave me the medicine of His Name, which has cured all disease. He extended His Mercy to me, and resolved all these affairs. || 2 || God confirmed His loving nature; He did not take my merits or demerits into account. The Word of the Guru’s Shabad has become manifest, and through it, my honor was totally preserved. || 3 || I speak as You cause me to speak; O Lord and Master, You are the ocean of excellence. Nanak chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, according to the Teachings of Truth. God preserves the honor of His slaves. || 4 || 6 || 56 ||
