On the other hand, too much proactivity will free some powerful and likely uncontrollable forces that we should keep locked up for the time being. Imagine the consequences of being too proactive with AI, geo-engineering, or human genome editing. Or entering an arms race with AI-controlled weapons that can kill without human supervision…

This week Gerd and Peter covered topics like responsible ecosystems and supply chains, and planning for externalities and unintended consequences.

They also discussed what kind of governance will be needed to actually implement ethical principles: this will most probably require a public not-for-profit organization with a co-operative structure. As soon as any object becomes connective and cognitive, it becomes smart. This type of smartness needs to be governed and regulated as it operates at the level of a new meta-intelligence.

In this podcast, Gerd and Petervan are talking through Chapter Gerd's book Technology vs Humanity, chapter 3, entitled "The Megashifts”.

The Megashifts include digitisation, automation, datafication, virtualisation, robotisation, and others (for a total of 10), and understanding them is the ticket to future success. This includes questions such as “What are Key Human Indicators?” and “What is real and what is not?”

The bottom line: as we head into exponential change, we must also collaborate to address ethics, culture, and values. Otherwise, it is certain that technology will gradually then suddenly become the purpose of our lives, rather than the tool to discover the purpose.
