Dr. Michael Dorsey , an environmental scientist who served on the Sierra Club's board of directors for 11 years, called the Sierra Club's recent "cautious endorsement" of the genetically engineered American Chestnut a form of "genetic engineering cronyism".

Dr. Dorsey made the statement on the August 30th episode of Breaking Green podcast produced by Global Justice Ecology Project.

Steve Taylor interviews photojournalist Orin Langelle about a United Nations and World Bank sponsored program called “reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation” (REDD). Langelle reflects on his part in documenting a community’s resistance to a forced relocation from Amador Hernandez in the Lacandon Jungle in 2011. The relocation was to be part of an agreement between the states of California and Chiapas Mexico as part of a REDD agreement.

There are increasing concerns by organic growers as to how the genetically engineered American Chestnut may endanger their certified organic status as Chestnut Growers.

Brian Caldwell owner of Hemlock Grove Farm talks about his opposition to the GE American Chestnut.

Numerous environmental organizations representing millions of members have signed on in opposition to the proposal to spread genetically engineered chestnut trees into the wild. One organization is Dogwood Alliance, which works to protect southern forests across 14 states.  The alliance opposes genetically engineered trees and corporate forest plantations as threats to biodiversity and climate. 

The plan to release genetically engineered Chestnut trees into the wild is opposed by many environmental groups, including the Indigenous Environmental Network.  BJ McManama of the IEN talks about indigenous opposition to the plan.

Anne Peterman warns that approval of the plan to release genetically engineered American Chestnut trees will open the door for the use of GE trees in industrial tree plantations.

Such plantations are already having devastating social and economic impacts around the world.

Petermann argues that adding GE trees will make them even more destructive.
