FHNW Opens New Dreispitz Campus: Future-Focused Learning Spaces and Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Professor Dr. Doris Agotai, Director of FHNW’s School of Computer Science, explains that the event marks the opening of FHNW’s new Dreispitz campus, featuring five floors of non-traditional learning environments with group, discussion, focus, co-working, and quiet zones alongside research spaces. The campus primarily relocates the School of Economics from the former site near the station and becomes a second site for the School of Computer Science, complementing the main site in Brugg-Windisch. Agotai describes FHNW as a University of Applied Sciences focused on applied research, industry partnerships, and project-based learning. She notes other Basel-area FHNW schools, including Art and Design nearby, Music, and additional campuses in Muttenz. The building has no single-room offices to encourage exchange, and a revealed “fridge” symbolizes collaboration between schools. Programs are offered in a mix of English and German.

The 32nd Swiss Federal Yodelling Festival, kicks off on Friday, June 26th, and running straight through Sunday, June 28th. For the first time since 1924, this massive event is taking over the city of Basel, Switzerland, under the brilliant motto 'Stadt und Land mitenand', bringing city life and country tradition together.

Over the duration of the festival, Basel is going to completely transform. We are talking about 12,000 active performers descending on the city. From master yodellers and alphorn players to highly skilled traditional flag-wavers. Plus, over 200,000 visitors are expected to flood the streets to take in the magic. How Winterhilfe Basel Supports Families and the Working Poor

This episode explores "invisible" poverty in Switzerland through a conversation with Claudia Burio, a board member of Winterhilfe Basel, a charity founded in 1936 to provide winter relief and now offering year-round, targeted support to people just above the poverty line. My Ear for You - Just Talk: A Volunteer Phone Line Tackling Loneliness in Switzerland

In this conversation, Dr. Olivier Seiler explains the origins and growth of the Swiss initiative "Mein Ohr für Dich" ("My Ear for You"), launched in March 2021 during COVID to offer lonely people a low-threshold way to chat with a real person. The service is not a crisis or suicide helpline. Volunteers mainly discuss everyday topics, and refer distressed callers to other organizations when needed. Around 50 screened and trained volunteers take shifts from home, supported by regular coaching and supervision from founders Philippe (psychologist) and Daniella (coach), plus team gatherings three times a year. The project expanded from an elderly-focused inspiration (the UK's "Silver Line") to all ages and includes a "Tandem Friends" option for weekly calls with the same volunteer while remaining anonymous and not meeting in person. They also discuss loneliness as a taboo in Switzerland, the limits of virtual connection.
