  • Geographer on Audiotree Live (Session #2)
Geographer is "soulful music from outer space" written and constructed by Mike Deni. It's beat-oriented, classically inspired indie pop that features serpentine key lines, layers of transcendent synth pads, and Deni's soaring falsetto. He produces the cosmic textures through the use of multiple synths conducted by a Midi controller and an  electric guitar run through an intricately laid-out pedalboard. Mike is a skillful craftsman of textures who has formed relationships with the equipment he uses. The same two synths passed down from his father have offered foundational tones to Geographer's sound since 2007.  His live band features even more synths and an electric cello among other highly effected instrumentation.
To date Geographer has released three full-lengths, two EP's, and remixes of tracks done by Blondefire, Rubblebucket, and Vacationer among others. Deni is currently in the process of releasing a covers EP which will showcase original takes on tracks by Kate Bush, New Order, and Paul Simon. Geographer's orchestral, cinematic sound has found its way into films, commercials, and television shows, producing multiple successful singles. His newest release, "Ghost Modern," is the most dynamic, multi-layered, and rich record to date, filled with songs that travel between 90's alt, danceable new wave, and his original forte: indie synth pop. It's a transformative, dense, and cleverly arranged release that's a must-listen for fans of Geographer's other material.

  • John Mark Nelson on Audiotree Live
John Mark Nelson is a well-spoken frontman with the subtle charm of a cultured outdoorsman and a personal maturity far beyond his years. He was born in 1993 in a small, rural suburb outside of Minneapolis to a family of musicians who encouraged him to play at the young age of 14. Nelson became a talented multi-instrumentalist who began on drums and was accepted at McNally Smith College of Music’s program before deciding to pursue the life of a touring musician full-time. He independently penned, recorded, and released his first full length, “Still Here” in 2011 at the age of 17. Nelson graduated from Minnetonka High School the next year and subsequently released his second full-length, “Waiting and Waiting” which premiered tracks on several local radio stations. His third full-length, “Sings the Moon,” gained wide exposure through placement of the video, “The Moon and the Stars,” on MTV. Though the album was recorded at the Library Recording Studio in Minneapolis and co-produced by Matt Patrick, Nelson kept to his independent core by funding the production budget through Kickstarter.

  • Jared & The Mill on Audiotree Live
All six members of Jared & The Mill were born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and it remains their hometown to this day. The band has a deep love for the desert region, finding solace in wide open views and new life in gulps of fresh petrichor. Though often thrown under the Americana umbrella, the band’s blend of folk, blues, and country yields what they have dubbed, “Western indie.” It’s a lively, story-focused sound fit for interstate drives and led by harmonious singalongs.
Jared & The Mill released their debut, “Western Expansion,” in 2013 and toured tirelessly to promote it. After a half a year of shows ranging from arena to pizza parlor, the band saw massive growth as performers and songwriters. They moved further from hometown references and used their multi-instrumental set up to channel both the attitude and feeling of Arizona’s physical and cultural diversity. Their next release, “The Life We Chose,” touches on shared experiences of tour mundanity and life huddled together in a van. It’s honest but optimistic, showing the close nature of their interband dynamic and love of performance. They’re close friends and musical companions who revel in their love for one another and positive energy from fans. No matter what difficulties they encounter on the road, Jared & The Mill let the stage lift their tired spirits.

  • Ivadell on Audiotree Live
Ivadell formed as an outlet to experiment with the softer side of its band members’ varying influences. It’s a drastic contrast from the death metal/hardcore projects they had previously written for, but still maintains an edge that’s both musically thoughtful and sonically heavy. Lead singer Josh Gilley’s heartfelt vocal delivery rises above the crunchy, ringing cacophony. He laments missed opportunities and yearns for another chance with help from the band’s sweet harmonies. They’re a young band with a unified goal and a promising, inventive sound.
Ivadell signed to Broken Circles Records in 2014 and released their first EP, “Flow,” that same year. “Flow” is a three-track sampler that debuts the band’s “capital R” rock. Ivadell went on to release “Maybe Tomorrow,” their first full-length, in 2015. The album’s heavily charred riffs and prominent low end are clearly influenced by mainstream alternative rock from the early millennium. Their grimy, belting guitar and bass tones mirror this era as well, but spritely fingerstyle licks and waves of ringing noise are picked from the last five years’ resurgence of emo and shoegaze.

  • Michael Rault on Audiotree Live
Michael Rault is a singer-songwriter whose influences lie mainly in the past. He’s a studio rat obsessed with the sounds of vintage gear, and has a specific preference for the 70’s, which he credits as having the holy grail of textures. Rault recently moved to Montreal after leaving his long-time residence in Toronto, but quickly found a transition home to lock himself in the darkness and churn out tracks. The studio is his avenue for experimentation and unlimited creativity, where he uses any instrument or tone he can reach to define “that sound.”
His 2015 release, “Living Daylight,” is the result of such experimentation. True to his retro obsession, the record’s rock baseline is brightened by bongos, fuzzed-out vocoder, and spindly keyboard sounds. It’s a lyrically playful, woozy, and satisfying listen all the way through. Rault is a driven songwriter whose live performance chops and love for the studio promise he’ll continue to travel in his own lane for years to come.
