  • Same Bible, Different Ballot: The Psychology Behind Our Politics

How can two people look at the exact same circumstances and come away believing completely different things? In this episode, Audrey asks what psychology actually says about why people become politically liberal or conservative in the U.S. She also asks what happens when political identity gets braided together with Christian identity. In this episode:

    • What the Big Five personality traits, especially openness and conscientiousness, do and don't tell us about political ideology
    • How threat, uncertainty, and the desire for order shape which political messages resonate
    • Moral foundations theory and why both sides can be speaking morally while missing each other's language
    • The difference between healthy respect for authority and authoritarianism
    • How white evangelical attitudes toward a politician's private character shifted between 2011 and 2016, and what a 2018 survey experiment reveals about motivated reasoning
    • Why symmetry in cognitive bias isn't the same as symmetry in conduct
    • What twin studies, family, and church tradition can and can't explain about our politics
    • Why certainty isn't the same as conviction
    • What it looks like when politics starts discipling the church, and the temptations facing both conservative and progressive Christians

The episode closes with five questions to ask yourself about how your politics line up with the kingdom of Heaven. You may still disagree with the people across the aisle. But before your next political argument, try asking: What is the other person seeing that I am not?If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a rating or comment. • Capitalism, Socialism, and the Christian Suspicion of Power

Welcome to the first episode of the Audrey With The Data podcast!

What if the biggest problem with socialism is also a problem with American capitalism?

In this episode, I break down the Christian critique of socialism and communism—concentrated power, loss of freedom, and control by a small elite—and ask why that same suspicion so often disappears when the power belongs to corporations and billionaires instead of the state.

We get into wealth concentration, corporate influence over elections, the difference between socialism and social democracy, what the early church actually taught about hoarding wealth, and why capitalism isn’t inherently more “Christian” than any other economic system.

This isn’t an argument for communism (far from it, actually). It’s an argument for consistency: if Christians believe unchecked power is dangerous, we should be willing to scrutinize it whether it comes from the government or the boardroom. It’s also an argument in favor of an economic system that is statistically proven to produce the best outcomes for all people… but you’ll have to watch the episode to find out what that system is!
