General George Joulwan saw the Berlin Wall go up as a West Point lieutenant and was serving as the commander of U.S. Army V Corps when it came down. Today, he joins AUSA’s Joe Craig to discuss his new book: Watchman at the Gates: A Soldier’s Journey from Berlin to Bosnia. GEN Joulwan served 36 years in the U.S. Army, finishing his military career as the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces in Europe (SACEUR) during the Rwandan genocide and the Bosnian peacekeeping missions of the 1990s.

Leading up to D-Day, the French Resistance gathered intelligence, harassed Axis occupiers and slowed German reinforcements. Every year on June 6th, people from around the world gather in the Normandy Region to commemorate Operation Overlord (D-Day) and the liberation of Europe.  While most of the focus is on US, British, and Commonwealth efforts, this year, the contributions of the French Resistance to the success of the Allied Landings at Normandy in WWII are being honored with a new monument. The Normandy French Resistance Monument is being sculpted right now and will be unveiled in Normandy on June 5, 2021 for the 77th D-Day Anniversary. Joining us today are two people central to the creation of the new monument: Captain Joseph Ivanov and Stephen Spears, the sculptor.

The Army Future Study Program (FSP) is examining how the Army could integrate emerging technologies in transformational ways to deter, fight, and win.  Dr. Jean Vettel and COL Stephanie Ahern of Army Futures Command (AFC) describe the outcomes of two recent FSP events conducted to refine Army Aimpoint 2035: Character of Warfare 2035 Seminar (November 2020) and Character of Landpower 2035 Seminar (February 2020).  With AFC in the lead, the Army is using a Team Ignite approach to integrate expertise from the threat, science, tech, concept and operations communities to more quickly and effectively inform “what could be.”
