Austin ISD

Austin ISD news, updates and more for Dec. 5.

Listen Later

We start by looking ahead to the 2026-27 school year, reminding students that it's time to begin gathering application materials—such as essays, auditions, and teacher recommendations—for middle or high school admissions-based programs. Preparing now ensures you are ready for the first round of enrollment in January, with general registration (Round 2) and transfer requests opening later in the Spring 2026 semester.

We also take a moment to wrap up Special Education Staff Appreciation Week (ending Dec. 5) by thanking the incredible Special Education Staff for their tireless dedication and impact in shaping brighter futures for students.

Finally, we highlight two must-see community events happening on Dec. 10. First, check out the Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy (YMLA) 7th Grade Showcase, running from 5:30 - 6:45 p.m., at the Gus Garcia campus. Students will demonstrate their talents through research presentations, handcrafted social studies artifacts, science experiments, and unique math projects, plus an all-grade-levels art showcase in the library. Also happening Dec. 10, the City of Austin illuminates Zilker Park for the Austin Trail of Lights Grand Opening Ceremony. This festive event features over two million lights, holiday trees, and more than 70 festive displays, including the work of this year’s Trail of Lights Essay and Illustration contest winner.
