Mat speaks with archaeologist Dr Matthew Kelly about the Nauru Missing 5 - five incredible Australians who, between 1940 and 1943 at the outbreak of the Pacific War, elected to stay on the island of Nauru to protect the Indigenous population and uphold law and order despite the threat of invasion by Japanese forces. These men gave their lives, their bodies never found: Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Royden Chalmers, Mr William Henry Doyle, Mr Frederick Francis Harmer, Dr Bernard Haselden Quin, and Mr Wilfred Shugg.
They were recently honoured in the 2019 Governor General Bravery Awards, and a team is working to locate them, and undertake an archaeological dig to repatriate them.
