You may have heard the phrase "life isn't easy." Life will throw up its challenges from time to time and no one can escape that fact. These challenges are defined as an obstacle or difficulty that comes in the way of us while achieving a desired end. Some of these challenges that we face are loss, trauma, breakups and divorce, abuse, relationship problems, and physical ailments. No one is exempted from these problems.  It may be tempting just to give up, but it will never be the solution- it only adds to the stress of life. In this case, what is the key to keep going in life despite all the challenges? RESILIENCE.  

When we hear the word "resilience," we often think about people who have overcome great obstacles. However, resilience is about so much more than just bouncing back from a difficult time. It's about confronting the obstacles that stand in the way of your success and using them as opportunities to grow and learn.

Without being aware of it, we all have biases that affect how we perceive reality and make decisions. Ever since I learned David Cooperrider's method/process Appreciative Inquiry, I became addicted to it and have made it my way of life. In everything I do, I ASK, and live out loud the spirit of appreciation and inquiry.

When these two sides are established and you dig in your heels with resolve then building a bridge between your identity and intentions will become an intuitive, automatic process. Every single moment, every single day, every little action you take will be a fruitful one.  

It will be like laying bricks between two well-aligned pillars. All through this process, your values and visions gain higher resolution. You become emotionally calm, confident, brave, authentic, and even compassionate towards all others who are on journeys of their own. The difference will be that you will ‘know thyself’ and know why and where you are headed.  

Here are the five questions, all over again, 

1. What are a few human behaviors that turn you on the most? 

2. What are those one or two things that most occupy your energy and daily time? 

3. What do you dream about? More specifically, what do you daydream about? 

4. What exactly, unconditionally do you want? 

5. What are the things, in your current state of affairs, which you are willing to let go of?  

Indulge and immerse yourself in these questions. Put your heart and mind into answering them such that you will never have to memorize stuff like,  “so your uniqueness Raju is that you are a courageous, compassionate, authentic being who wants to help other beings get clarity then lead a happy and fulfilling life.”

Yeah, so why do people fear standing up and speaking out?

The National Institute of Mental Health, USA reports that public speaking anxiety, or glossophobia, affects about 73% of the population. The underlying fear is a judgment or negative evaluation by others. Public speaking anxiety is considered a social anxiety disorder.

Here’s another interesting take on it by the National Society Anxiety Center, USA. They say, “Evolution psychologists believe there are primordial roots. Our prehistoric ancestors were vulnerable to large animals and harsh elements. Living in a tribe was a basic survival skill. Rejection from the group led to death. Speaking to an audience makes us vulnerable to rejection, much like our ancestors’ fear.”

Yeah, so why do people fear standing up and speaking out?

One accepts the fact that he may be tall, short, intelligent, not intelligent, rich, unrich, successful, or unsuccessful at life. One also learns to accept that he may be easy to anger, easy to disturb, easy to sadden. One also learns to accept that he may be demanding, obsessive or even controlling.

This does not mean that one ought not to make efforts to change towards a better version of oneself but before making these efforts one ought to come to terms with whoever he is.

Huge amounts of our energies are wasted in lamenting about our past, or about the lack of resources or about our perceived personal shortcomings.

When we learn to accept the facts of our lives and label them as just being unique then we give ourselves and our lives multiple opportunities to evolve.

Here are three suggestions from the top of my head on how to go about accepting ourselves.

Your identity is the sum total of all that you believe in and all that you value. These beliefs and these values, over your lifetime, have accumulated into a single entity…you. Your genetic structure, your environment, your influences, your education, and your experiences keep stacking up into becoming you. For a large part of your life, you have little control over these elements but over time you begin to take charge. You begin to choose and carve out your own self. You begin to become a Michael Angelo to your own David-you. Yes, it does matter how early on in your life you pick up the chisel and hammer and how consciously, courageously, creatively, compassionately, and constructively you begin to use these tools. Therein lies self-mastery. Therein, your identity morphs your intentions into destiny.
