I'm so excited to welcome writer Curtis Chin on the podcast to discuss his memoir "Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant," which explores his upbringing in his family's Chinese restaurant in Detroit during the 1980s. He shares how the restaurant and his family's history in Michigan since the 1800s inspired him to write the memoir to pass on this story to the next generation. He then touches on the challenges Chinese immigrants faced during that time period, including anti-Asian violence and the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Then, Curtis reflects on how his intersectional identity as an Asian American, working-class person, and closeted gay youth collided in formative experiences, such as an incident at the restaurant involving a drag queen customer. He shares how the writing process allowed him to revisit and process these complex identity issues.
