Many people like to be in charge and call the shots, but authority comes with responsibility. Nehemiah demonstrates this importance as he responds to the desperate situation of the Jews as he first listens and has compassion for their plight, takes action to address the situation, and requires obedience. But best of all, the passage gives us a beautiful picture of the gospel, and our need to be rescued from our spiritual debt as the Jews were rescued from their financial debt.
