Within the dialogue between Moses and the Lord, Moses is apprehensive to go to Egypt and be used to deliver God's people from the Pharaoh. God responds with showing Moses the authority He has given him in order to be such a powerful instrument. The staff within his hands is a symbol of that authority, his shepherding staff.
