From New Tastes to New Words… 🗣️✨
My son was non-verbal until recently, and like many parents of special children, I clung to every small gesture, every sound, every attempt to communicate. Since January, we made some mindful changes to his diet—not just healthier food, but richer sensory experiences. We introduced new flavors, textures, spices, and even slightly tangy and aromatic combinations. What started as an experiment with taste turned into a surprising piece of the speech development puzzle.
With every new flavor, I noticed him becoming more aware of his mouth, tongue, and how it moved. Slowly but surely, he began making sounds with more clarity. And then—he began saying a few actual words. 💬❤️
I wondered… was it just the natural course of his development, or did these new sensory stimuli activate something deeper? As I dug deeper, I found that taste stimulation activates parts of the brain involved in oral motor control. While science hasn’t fully connected the dots yet, some studies do suggest that the gustatory system (our sense of taste) can influence oral awareness, which is essential for speech.
It might not be the only reason he’s progressing, but I truly believe that exploring new tastes is giving him a new sense of control over his own mouth—and with it, a doorway to language.
For anyone walking this path—speech doesn’t always start in the throat. Sometimes, it begins with a spoonful of curry, a bite of mango, or the warmth of ginger on the tongue. 🌶️🍋🍯

Not every parent chooses to share their child’s diagnosis publicly — and I respect that.

A recent viral video of a special educator misbehaving with a child shook me deeply. It took me back to when my son was just 2.5 years old, and we were looking for therapy support. A therapist visited us, assessed my child, and confidently said he could start sessions. But then he added something that left me stunned—“At times, I might need to manhandle him.”

Have you ever walked into a showroom filled with TVs—each screen playing something different, all on full brightness, full contrast, and full volume? It’s overwhelming, right? Your brain struggles to focus on any one thing. That’s sensory overload.
Or imagine if every radio station started playing on the same frequency—a chaotic mix of sounds with no way to filter or tune out. That’s what sensory overload feels like to many children and individuals with sensory sensitivities, especially those on the autism spectrum.
When they go into a social setting—a mall, a park, a party—their senses may be flooded with everything at once. Every sound, every light, every movement. Their brains can’t filter or prioritize like ours might. So they may cover their ears, shut their eyes, or even retreat into themselves—not because they’re being difficult, but because they’re trying to cope.

Why I chose a special school for my child?
As a parent to a special child, I often get asked why I didn’t opt for an inclusive school—especially since I actively advocate for inclusion.
Here’s my honest answer:
1. Limited Support in Inclusive Schools
Most inclusive schools offer a special educator for just 30 minutes to an hour a day. Beyond that, our children spend time with neurotypical peers and teachers who are not specifically trained to support their unique needs.
2. Therapy Needs Are Often Ignored
Inclusive schools usually don’t provide essential services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, or individualized special education—services that are not optional but critical for a child with special needs to thrive.
3. Choosing What’s Right Over What Looks Right
Sometimes, we parents fall into the trap of satisfying our ego—just to say, “My child goes to a regular/inclusive school.” But this journey is not about me; it’s about him. I would never want my child to miss out on the support he truly needs just so I can feel accepted or proud in front of others.
Special schools are designed for kids like mine. They are equipped with trained professionals, personalized attention, and integrated therapies that help children flourish at their own pace.
Inclusion is beautiful—but only when it supports the child’s needs. However, it is not uncommon for parents to lose patience during this process, especially when progress seems slow or when the child resists new tasks. In such moments, frustration can lead to a shift in focus—parents may become more concerned with asserting control or “winning” the situation rather than prioritizing the child’s learning and emotional well-being. This approach can be harmful and counterproductive in the long run.
Parents may unconsciously focus on their own emotional needs, such as feeling in control or forcing the child to comply, rather than recognizing the child’s needs. This often stems from frustration or a desire to avoid perceived failure. The Bhagavad Gita addresses this tendency when it says:
“सर्वे गुणा: कर्मसिद्धि: सर्वं प्रपद्यते।”
