Auto Correct: More MPG

UPDATE: We've had some discussion concerning the tip on "Refuel in the morning". With underground storage of gas, maybe the outside temperature fluctuations don't change the volume of gas enough to make a difference.

Useful Tips to Improve Your Gas Mileage

1.   Stick to the motor oil recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. ... those are the oils your manufacturer has tested with your car for its peak performance.

2.   Keep your gas cap fully sealed. ... be mindful when replacing the cap so that oxygen doesn’t get in or the seal of the cap doesn’t degrade.

3.   Drive in the highest possible gear but without putting undue stress on your engine. . . for a manual. Automatics – keep it on overdrive

4.   Forget aftermarket solutions . . performance enhancing gizmos or technology make promises but don’t deliver or the effect is negligible.

5.   Utilize online resources to find the best deals on gas. Something like Gas Buddy or AAA; use Kroger fuel discounts, Wal-Mart giftcard discounts; T-Mobile and Shell have partnership.

6.   Refuel in the morning, not towards the end of the day . . . you can save a dollar of two because the gas is cooler and denser. When it expands, less gas makes up the same volume

7.   Plan your trip . . . combine errands. UPS plans their routes to only make right turns to be the most fuel efficient

8.   Choose your wheels carefully . . alloy wheels are lighter. If you upsize your wheels you can get better mileage but the wheels may weigh more.

9.   Use your car’s cruise control . . it helps to maintain constant speed and reduce your need to accelerate and brake

10.                   Drive 55 when practical. It saves gas over higher speeds – you have to stop for gas going faster so you lose what time you tried to save going faster.

You can find out if your car has a past recall by going to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s website: nhtsa.gov/recalls           and inputting your VIN number.

Consumer Reports has a list of 108          2007-16 models that have a record of much-worse-than-average overall reliability based on subscriber responses to their Annual Auto Survey. Today, we’re going to caution you about: 2005-2015 Mini Cooper        on several factors such as repair cost, average mileage when problems occur, and for loss of power steering.

Please consider reading up on the reliability of this car before purchasing it as a used car, suggests Consumer Reports.     carcomplaints.com/ is another resource for unreliable car lists.
