Being the daughter of a surgeon and an O.R. nurse, Whitney Morgan (sagepointacupuncture.com) believed that doctors had magical powers. She grew up struggling with asthma and allergies, and taking pills, liquid medications and inhalers to manage the symptoms. Even though Whitney never got better taking the medications, all of her faith and trust was endowed upon the medical field. Until it wasn’t.
In her early 20s, while still struggling with the symptoms of allergies and asthma (and taking the prescribed medications that went along with those conditions), she began to have panic attacks. Never fear, Xanax is here!
Later on, after the birth of her daughter, she began having skin flares and was diagnosed with psoriasis. The dermatologist’s answer? Steroid creams!
In her mid-thirties came a diagnosis of interstitial cystitis (an inflammatory bladder condition). The urologist’s answer? Surgery! Powerful pain medications! “Join a support group, ‘cause you’re stuck with this for life Babe!”
That was the breaking point for Whitney. The point at which she decided to take her health into her own hands and investigate how her symptoms were connected, and what was at the root of all her maladies.
In this episode, Whitney talks about what she learned, the steps she took, and the changes made to bring her body back into balance. She learned that symptoms are not the problem, but rather, the body’s way of telling you that something is out of balance.

You are in for a treat on today’s episode! I talk with Corrie Broughton, of corriebroughton.com, who shares her “saga” of a lifetime of health struggles that became progressively worse, and involved a cluster of symptoms, including unexplainable pain in her arms and legs, severe ringing in the ears, bloating, pain in her veins, panic attacks, sores on her arms and legs, and even losing her ability to read! Corrie went through the gamut of specialists seeking answers to her mystery ailments, including her primary care doctor, a rheumatologist, cardiologist, dermatologist, otolaryngologist (ear-nose-throat), and gastroenterologist. At some points along the way she was made to feel that she was creating these symptoms in her head, and one doctor even suggested that what she really needed was to be taking anti-depressants! Eventually, Corrie received diagnoses of FIVE different autoimmune conditions, including Hashimoto’s, interstitial cystitis, vasculitis, Sjogren’s Syndrome, and gluten sensitivity. She was offered the standard treatment from all of the specialists she saw, “There’s nothing you can do to reverse this condition. You’ll just have to treat the symptoms with this medication for the rest of your life.”
Corrie was determined that her life didn’t have to be filled with such misery and became hell-bent on finding solutions. After doing some functional lab testing, she discovered some hidden causes of dysfunction at the root of her conditions, including food she was eating every day. Corrie also altered her way of being to include more self-love and self-care and has been able to find a beautiful life on the other side of all the suffering.

Dr. Paul is a survivor of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of bone marrow cancer that he was diagnosed with at the age of 4. In this episode, he shares about his 3 ½ years of treatments and the impact his illness had on his family at the time. He discusses the long-term impact of the conventional treatments of chemo and radiation on his health, with a compromised immune system and getting sick easily, and the later development of an autoimmune skin condition that left him covered in a blistery rash from head-to-toe. Dr. Paul talks about how finally deciding to “stop being an idiot” and making necessary changes to his diet and lifestyle allowed him to get his autoimmune skin condition under control.

In his new book, Wired to Eat, Robb discusses how we are genetically wired to eat more and move less, which is why in our modern world of hyper-palatable processed foods that are readily available in unlimited quantities, that it’s no wonder so many people are chronically ill and struggling with achieving and maintaining healthy weight. But, as Wolf shares in his book, there is a solution!
Robb goes into his personal story of what he calls a “precipitous crash” in his health, when he dropped from a muscular 175 pounds to 130 pounds due to malabsorption from ulcerative colitis, and was suffering from a myriad of symptoms including hair loss, splitting nails, and horrible sleep. He shares the multiple triggers that sent his health into a downward spiral…triggers that included both how he was feeding his body AND how he was treating his body with lifestyle choices. He shares how the doctors threw their hands up and told him that he drew the short straw with bad genes, and that he would be facing surgery and a lifetime of medications, which as a research biochemist, he knew were a BAD idea. Oh, and they also congratulated him on his vegan diet filled with grains and legumes and told him that he’d be dead without it. And then…he dug into the research and decided to make himself the experiment.
He talks about the fallacy in modern medicine that proof from lab research is required for medical reimbursement to justify trying dietary regimens that are divergent from food guide recommendations (which are based on horrible science by the way), and suggests that we let clinical outcomes drive the boat. He dives into how owning the 1st and 4th CrossFit affiliate gyms IN THE WORLD allowed him to have a massive “laboratory” for about 10 years in which to experiment with an ancestral approach to diet and lifestyle.
Robb discusses how modern medicine has done a fantastic job at dealing with infectious disease, but a HORRIBLE JOB of dealing with chronic degenerative diseases, and that because chronic disease is a multifactorial problem, we need a multifactorial approach to resolving it, including:
He also dives into the importance of identifying your emotion-based “WHY” for long-term buy-in and success with improving your health, and discusses how the phrase, “Everything in moderation” is a dangerous TRAP because in our modern world of foods that are engineered to make you want to eat more, moderation simply does not exist! And he discusses his perhaps controversial take on the concept of having a “healthy relationship with food”…that there should never be guilt or morality associated with food. With food, there are only consequences, not a relationship (healthy or not).

In this episode, I talk with Jim Shelby a 42 year old project manager, former Marine, and member of the National Guard. He discusses how he never really considered that the foods he was eating made any difference in his health, that he thought of it as merely an energy source. That is, at least, until he completed a program in which he removed all processed foods, grains, dairy, most sugars, and focused on high quality meats, fats, and vegetables and had life-changing results. He was able to avoid getting a CPAP machine which had recently been prescribed after a sleep study revealed he had sleep apnea and was chronically sleep deprived, improvements in his psoriasis, his energy skyrocketed, he was able to workout more and recover faster, found himself far less reactive when responding to stressful events, and had amazing improvements in his body composition.

In this episode, I talk with Nancy McQuiston, a 42 year-old registered nurse who fully believed, heart and soul, that conventional medicine had all the answers. That is, at least, until November of 2011 when she was damaged by a mandatory influenza vaccination!
Her symptoms emerged quickly and spectacularly!
Nancy says that within four hours her skin was burning as though she had a sunburn all over her body. Within 24 hours her ears were ringing, beginning chronic tinnitus that never stopped. Within 36 hours she began experiencing aching in her hands, feet, and hips, bright red joints, and debilitating pain that left her unable to sleep for the laborious months ahead. Exercise became extremely painful, leaving her unable to participate in any of the activities she loves, and even walking upstairs left her in pain for days. One to two years after the injury, she began experiencing severely dry eyes and mouth. She describes the depression that she experienced as she began to lose hope as her symptoms progressed.

In today's episode 52 year old Rich Hillsgrove shares his story of how he recovered his health after struggling with a lifetime of chronic fatigue and a weak immune system by making changes to his diet and lifestyle. He compares the difference in the way he feels to "cleaning his windshield". No longer does he have to miss out on family events and holidays or take naps after any physical efforts in order to be able to enjoy a fun social night out with his wife. I love Rich's story, because it is such a common one in our modern world, and Rich's story can be anyone's story.
