Betty Arnett grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and obtained a B.S. in Education from the University of Tennessee. She immediately accepted the position of housemother at the Jesse Lee Home in Seward. After her marriage to Russell Arnett, attorney, she taught in the Anchorage School District for 39 years. Betty’s teacher training tapes on kindergarten received a 971 Alaska Press Club Award. She has had a long-term connection to AUUF and produced the videotapes, “The Gospel According to Richard R. Gay” and “The Little Log Church on the Park Strip.” Member of Richard R. Gay Trust, Governor Egan’s Advisory Board on Drugs, a past Executive Director of the Alaska World Affairs Council, and the author of “22 and the Mother of 11.”

Raised Roman Catholic, she became a UU as a young adult and has been a UU for over 35 years. She brings experience from previous careers in corporate marketing and communications, and not-for-profit management in organizations as diverse as Procter & Gamble and Planned Parenthood. After attending Cornell University and working in the business arena, Rev. Page prepared for ministry service at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in New York and at Star King School for the Ministry, a multi-religious seminary in Berkeley, California. Through her ministerial work, she has championed interfaith cooperation and is a proven bridge-builder. She originally hails from the Finger Lakes region of New York and has lived in states across the U.S. She is the mother of two grown daughters, Petra and Greta.

Rev. Denise Sudbeck is a married trans woman living in Anchorage and pastor of the emerging Metropolitan Community Church. She is currently working toward a Doctor of Ministry degree with a dissertation in trans-focused theology. Sudbeck also serves as campaign co-chair of Fair Anchorage. a coalition of local citizens urging a “no” vote on Proposition 1.

David Lockard is a longtime resident of Anchorage who is raising two teenagers, including his transgender son, Col. He’s currently serving as campaign co-chair of Fair Anchorage.

Rev. Kim Patterson is executive pastor of Anchorage City Church, as well as the author of "Swift Justice -- Leveling the Playing Field for America's Re-Entry Citizens" (2012) about the predicament of minorities and the poor when they reenter society from the correctional system. He is also the founder of Connections Alaska, Inc., a faith-based educational resource for young adult Alaskan males, especially at-risk, re-entry, substance-experienced, and homeless males (ages 19 - 30). Rev. Patterson is the son of longtime Anchorage Shiloh Baptist minister Alonzo Patterson.

Teresa Pond, the Producing Artistic Director of Cyrano’s Theatre Company, was born and raised in the Anchorage theater scene (her first show was at Grant Hall Theatre when she was 10 weeks old!). Teresa received her BFA in Communications at Chapman University, then served as Executive Director of Anchorage Community Theatre in the 1990's for several years. After receiving her MFA in Directing from UC-Irvine, she moved to New York City and has directed professionally across the country and internationally with companies such as Women's Project Theatre (Off-Broadway), New York Classical Theatre, Vital Theatre Company, New show theatre development, NY Fringe Festival, and numerous theaters regionally over the past 15 years. She has served on arts councils and various non-profits and has collaborated on and off the stage with organizations such as Perseverance Theatre, ACT, ATY, Alaska Native Heritage Center, Alaska Dance Theatre, UAA Department of Theatre, Out North Theatre.

David Scheel is a Professor of Marine Biology at Alaska Pacific University as well as a nationally recognized authority on octopus behavior and ecology. His research has been featured on the NPR Science Friday program, National Geographic website and Scientific American magazine, as well as numerous academic journals. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York, Scheel earned masters and doctorate degrees in Ecology at the University of Minnesota. He joined APU in 2000 and has since studied octopus behavior all around the world. At this event, he'll highlight his research in Australia and Alaska, including his discovery here of a new species of large octopus.

Becca Bernard is a ministry student at Starr King School for the Ministry, a Unitarian Universalist seminary. She has been active with AUUF for the past two years.  She practiced environmental law for more than 20 years, both in California and in Alaska, representing conservation organizations, Alaska Native tribes and corporations, and community groups in their efforts to protect clean air, clean water, ecosystems, and fisheries.  She is also a public education advocate who co-founded Great Alaska Schools Anchorage and is a mother of two boys.  She teaches Nonviolent Communication at AUUF and elsewhere.
