In this episode, we welcome Joe Kennedy to the show. He used to be an assistant football coach at a public high school in Bremerton, Washington. After games, he would pray at the 50-yard line by himself. When some coaches and players noticed him doing that, some of them decided to join him at the 50 in prayer after the games. The members of his school board said that they were worried that it would violate the Establishment Clause of the US Constitution, and they tried to force Coach Kennedy to stop praying. He refused. The school responded by not renewing his coaching contract (essentially firing him). He, rightfully, sued the school board, and that fight made its way all the way to the Supreme Court in 2022, where the court ruled in favor of Kennedy, voting 6-3, that the government cannot suppress an individual’s expression of religious observance, and if they do so then they are violating the rights to Free Exercise and Free Speech. The 2024 major motion picture “Average Joe” was made about Coach Kennedy and his struggle for religious liberty. In this interview, we discuss all of that in detail and much more. Let’s get into it…
