Traffic light data provided by TTS is fed to the team so they can optimize their cohort. The fleet of vehicles has a central intelligence, to direct this cohort, when to accelerate or decelerate enabling it to catch a growing wave of green lights.

In a world of connected vehicles, we know the identity of the vehicle, we know type of vehicle, how far it is from the stop line and it's a speed. We could customize this for that vehicle, for the whole cohort, as we have proven in this project. In this episode Jingtao sits down with Stephan Tarnutzer to discuss this and the role TTS played in a recent Automotive IQ Connected Vehicles USA DOE project we collaborated on. 

Jingtao Ma, CTO Traffic Technology Services: Jingtao, also co-founder of Traffic Technology Services, has over 15 years of progressive experience in the fields of real-time traffic data fusion and services, multi-resolution transportation system modeling, and traffic engineering. He has research and development, software development and transportation consulting experiences in China and North America, having authored over 60 publications. He holds a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from the University of California, Davis, a Master degree in Transportation Engineering and Economics from Tongji University, Shanghai, China, and a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

AVL recently partnered with Michigan Technological University, American Center for Mobility (ACM), Borg Warner Inc. (BW), Navistar (NAV) and Traffic Technology Services (TTS) for a Connected Cohort Optimization project funded by Department of Energy, EEMS: Energy Efficient Mobility Systems, VTO: Vehicle Technologies Office.

 The project is answering this fundamental question “What can the synergy of fusing connectivity and automation in multiple vehicles that aren't just light duty vehicles or mixing heavy duty and light duty together? How can they work together as a team cooperatively to reduce energy on different infrastructures?” In this week’s episode Stephan Tarnutzer is joined by Darrell Robinette, MTU Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics. In this episode they discuss these answers and more. 

 The project aimed to: 

• Develop co-simulation environment to engineer improved energy consumption synergy on various infrastructure scales with mixed vehicle propulsion, connectivity, drive automation technology levels
• Integrate expanded connectivity data sharing and link cloud based optimization into LD-HD CAV vehicle test fleet
• Validate models and demonstrate 10-50% energy reductions at intersection, arterial roadway and limited access highway scenarios

 Darrell Robinette, MTU Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics: Darrell joined the MTU in August of 2016 after nine years at General Motors working in the Powertrain division. His engineering roles included powertrain noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), powertrain controls, calibration, development and validation and new electrification product engineering. Darrell holds 15 granted US patents in powertrain and driveline engineering from his time at GM. In returning to Michigan Tech, Darrell’s objectives are to educate and train engineering students for careers in propulsion system engineering through courses and research in mobility systems electrification, propulsion system integration and connected and automated vehicle controls and optimization for energy consumption.

 Darrell’s funded research projects from industry and federal agencies include:

•  General Motors - Torque Converter and Automatic Transmission dynamic testing and simulation
•  Ford Motor Company - Torque Converter and Driveline transient NVH
• Dept. of Energy - Various, connected and automated vehicle optimization, heavy duty off-road electrification
• ARPA-E - NEXTCAR I and II programs for connected and automated vehicles

Super Turbo Home - SuperTurbo Technologies

The SuperTurbo is a mechanically driven turbocharger. It is capable of exchanging power to and from the engine crankshaft and, effectively is an on-demand boost device. The SuperTurbo gives an engine the exact amount of air it wants wherever and whenever it wants it. The different functions the SuperTurbo provides is found in superchargers, turbochargers and turbo-compounders. However, the SuperTurbo can provide the same functionality of these three devices in one package.

AVL has been a partner of Super Turbo assisting development in Diesel DVP and H2ICE simulation and testing.

 Diesel DVP

•  Created a durability test plan using the AVL Load Matrix™ test optimization process to tailor test cycles to achieve test severity inline with customer usage
• Developed test cycles to meet facility, engine and Superturbo capabilities and test cycle requirements
• Continue to monitor test progress, coordinate team reviews and monitor test results on a regular basis

 H2ICE Simulation and Testing 

• Conducted a comparison of Diesel and H2 operating conditions and analyzed impact on Diesel DVP.  This generated a list of priority actions for potential future analysis and testing
• Developing a H2 specific compressor design that SuperTurbo would own and be able to utilize on future customer products
• Conducted engine performance simulation to demonstrate potential for Superturbo to facilitate Diesel-like transient response and achieve NOx reduction towards EURO VI.
