Sarathy Korwar is a London-based drummer, percussionist, composer, and producer. He has established himself as one of the most prolific and visionary voices in contemporary jazz and global music, continually pushing the boundaries of how traditional sounds and modern ideas collide.

Notable Milestones

Day to Day (2016): His critically acclaimed debut on Ninja Tune, featuring stunning field recordings of the Afro-Indian Sidi community of Gujarat blended with contemporary jazz.

Collaborator & Producer: Beyond leading the UPAJ Collective, Sarathy is a close collaborator with heavyweights like Shabaka Hutchings, Alabaster DePlume, and Photay. He also co-produced and co-wrote Anoushka Shankar's Grammy-nominated album Chapter III: Return to Light.

In this insightful episode, we welcomed mental health coach and speaker Sunny Chopra to discuss the often-overlooked topic of men's mental health and breaking through emotional barriers. Sunny opened up about his personal journey, sharing how childhood bullying and the pressure to "hold it together" led to suppressed emotions and eventual outbursts, driving him to seek help and eventually guide others. We explored the deep-seated stigma surrounding men crying and the societal conditioning that prevents men from expressing vulnerability. Sunny used a powerful "boat analogy" to describe the danger of isolation, illustrating how distancing oneself from support can make hope disappear like land from a drifting vessel. Our conversation also highlighted the profound impact of childhood narratives on adult behavior and the necessity of emotional awareness to break through these barriers. Finally, we discussed practical ways to create safe spaces for partners and friends to open up, emphasizing that true strength lies in understanding and expressing one's emotions.

In this Season 2, Episode 6, titled "Do Hathaan di Lutt with Bikram Singh Kullewalia," we sat down with activist Bikram Singh Kullewalia to reflect on the long-standing protests and morchas regarding international student and immigration issues. Bikram, who has been a consistent figure in these movements, shared his personal motivations for maintaining physical and mental resilience, emphasizing the importance of fitness to combat the depression that can arise from challenging circumstances. We discussed the evolution of the protests, from initial hesitations about permanent encampments to the realization of how critical the Ontario immigration issues were, inspired by similar movements in PEI.

The conversation delved into the lessons learned from the months-long struggle, which lasted from August to January. Bikram opened up about the personal and organizational growth experienced during this time, noting how the true colors of people and systems are revealed during such hardships. We concluded with a critical analysis of the current democratic system, where Bikram argued that we are living in a capitalist framework that often mimics democracy while failing to protect the marginalized, as seen in the silence of courts and media on immigrant issues.

In this reflective Season 2, Episode 4, titled "Reflection," we took a moment to look back on our journey, discussing everything from personal frustrations to the power of collective action.

We started with a light-hearted debate on being addressed formally versus informally, before diving into the core theme of time and presence. We shared our personal struggles with feeling "out of time" and the paradox of time speeding up as we get engrossed in work. We emphasized the importance of staying present and avoiding the failure that comes from setting unrealistic expectations for our creative work, referencing the advice of mental health professional Deepak Kashyap from a previous episode.

The conversation culminated in a reflection on the power of the recent PGWP (Post-Graduate Work Permit) holder rallies. We recalled capturing footage of the early rallies, noting the powerful weight, pain, and collective strength visible in the crowd, and feeling lucky to have witnessed and documented those moments of community power.

In this extensive Season 2, Episode 3, we continue our conversation with Mahnoor Khan about her recent trip to Pakistan and the profound issue of Panjab and its Virasat (heritage). Mahnoor described her experience in Lahore, noting that the city has a mood of its own, and you must be ready to embrace its unpredictability.

The central theme of the discussion was the devastating impact of the post-1947 partition and the creation of nation-states on the free movement of culture, information, and people across Panjab. Mahnoor shared how her recent trip reaffirmed her Punjabi identity, which was previously less prominent. We discussed how this division has negatively impacted industries, especially the art industry in Pakistan.

We ended the conversation with a critical discussion about the need for reunification of the Punjabi languages and cultural roots. We stressed the necessity for both sides of Punjab to learn Shahmukhi (Persian script) and Gurmukhi (Gurmukhi script), noting that understanding languages like Farsi is crucial for accessing the region's religious and historical texts. We emphasized that working with dedicated individuals who are committed to this cultural revitalization, without expectation of monetary gain, is key to success.

In this deep and emotional Season 2, Episode 2, we spoke with writer Bupinder Singh Bali about his powerful book, Those Who Stayed: The Sikhs of Kashmir. Bali shared the intense motivation behind his writing, which began with recording the oral and micro-histories of people affected by violence and trauma in Kashmir, emphasizing that these small, personal histories are often missing from the grand narrative.

Bali explained that he chose to write the book in a docu-memoir style to ensure it reached a wide audience, rather than remaining confined to academic circles [09:02]. By weaving his personal life and experiences into the non-fiction narrative, he connected with the universal suffering of almost 90% of Kashmiris. He also stressed the importance of using a language (like English) and medium that maximizes reach, ensuring the voices of the marginalized are heard by the masses.

The episode concluded with a stark reminder that the incidents of violence were crimes against humanity, and a summary of the community's demand for mass migration.

In this Season 2 premiere, Episode 1, we sit down with the artist Just Prince to discuss his album, Nacheez (I am insignificant). Just Prince explains the title's meaning, reflecting on our small place in the universe, and the album's core message: be kind to one another because we are all going through similar experiences.

The artist describes the unconventional, fluid structure of his music, stating he wants to "break all the structures" and move away from the typical verse-chorus format of pop music [06:54]. We discussed the importance of the message over the production quality, which Just Prince acknowledges is constrained by his limited resources, but he remains secure in his artistic vision. He concluded with a simple message for our audience: be kind to everyone and make sure you are not hurting others.

In this compelling Episode 8, titled "I Am: A Perfect Palindrome," we were joined by mental health professional Deepak Kashyap for an enlightening discussion on identity, immigration, and mental well-being in the diaspora. We discussed how South Asian immigrants often confuse their cherished culture with the restrictive politics they fled, often leading to a "hidden" identity. Deepak stressed that many immigrants leave due to a lack of choice, not a quest for adventure, citing his own experience as a gay man from India as an example. The conversation culminated in powerful advice for mental health, framed around a vital triangle: actively caring for your body, building fulfilling, non-competitive relationships, and embracing the simple, complete self-affirmation: "I am." Finally, we urged the community to stop limiting their cultural experiences and to confront the serious racism within the diaspora against Black and Indigenous peoples.

In this deeply personal and powerful Episode 7, "Intersection of Art and Trans Rights," we welcomed the acclaimed artist and activist, Jannat Ali, to discuss her journey and the crucial role of art in the fight for trans rights. Jannat explained that art has been a source of oxygen for her since childhood, especially as she faced early societal pressures to conform to a male role.

Jannat shared how her early love for classical, "feminine" music, inherited from her grandmother, put her at odds with family expectations to display power and traditionally masculine traits. She highlighted the internal conflict between external perceptions and her "inner voice," or authentic self, noting that her art became a place of refuge and expression.

We concluded with Jannat's urgent message for our viewers: the need for tolerance regarding gender. She urged listeners to approach the community with an open mind, listen to their stories, and challenge preconceived notions. Finally, she called for a community effort to create a safe space or "hub" for the arts, where trans individuals can nurture their culture, values, and authentic selves.
