In this episode David shares while listening the ESPN 710 Keyshawn in the morning, he has an "aha" moment.   He heard Keyshawn Johnson mention a coach is responsible for "coaching up" their players.  This resonated with David.  Throughout his career he heard many leaders blame their "players" or having "poor performers" but never realize its their responsibility to "coach them up."  David talks about why we fail to coach others up.

In this episode David shares a defining moment with his 9 year old son.  He started playing football for the first time and was ready to quit after two days of conditioning.  During their talk David new he was close to quitting.  They talked about courage and mental toughness.  There is a parallel between teaching our kids and team good habits.  During these defining moments you will reinforce positive or negative habits.  David's son choose to step forward despite his fear.  The next day the best of him came out on the field.  These are the moments where character and courage are born.

This episode is in memory of Dave Ballentine from the Surging Forward Podcast.  Sometimes we never get a chance to tell those who had a lasting impact on our life and career.  Mentors play a huge role in our career and life.  One of David's mentors, Dave Ballentine, passed away only a week after his final podcast episode on May 13th, 2018.  David shares throughout our journey as a leader everyday we choose what kind of lasting memory others will have of us.  Compassion was the last thing he learned in his career.  The ways he learned to measure how you impact others is how they interact with you after they no longer work for you.  Many of his leaders still reach out to him for guidance and advice.

In this episode David shares a recent incident with a disgruntle customer who was extremely offensive.  David discusses how difficult it is to remove the emotion while its happening.  He shares how he needed to remember his roles is to resolve the problem not escalate it by allow emotion in.  During his phone call, the customer continued to belittle every party involved.  David had to keep his cool and find a solution.  If you ever felt extremely frustrated by a customer or clients this is a great episode to listen to.
