Although he was weak and sickly for most of his life, Ignatius managed to become a monk and was revered for his strength of character and powerful witness of faith. He was known for walking around the city requesting alms and impressing others with his peaceful and obedient faith.

Born a pagan and raised with a good education, Pachomius became a Christian after serving in the Roman army. Going into the desert he found a hermit to guide his faith and eventually formed his own community of monks. His community was so successful that he formed many others and became known as the father of communal monasticism.
